India finished fourth at the Aichi–Nagoya 2026 Asian Games with 85 medals—21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze—according to Hindustan Times. That is India’s second-highest reported medal total and second-highest gold count at an Asian Games, behind the 2023 Hangzhou campaign. India’s fourth-place finish matches its 2023 placing.
Where India’s 2026 result ranks
The answer depends on which measure you use. India’s 85 medals rank second among the campaigns compared here, and its 21 gold medals also rank second. Its fourth-place country finish ties the reported 2023 position.

These are separate comparisons: medal totals do not determine country placement by themselves. Hindustan Times reports that India placed above Uzbekistan in 2026 despite equal gold counts because India had more silver medals.

Why sources differ on India’s 2023 medal total
The Government of India’s New India Samachar retrospective records 107 medals in 2023: 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze. The Hindustan Times comparison gives 106: 28 gold, 38 silver and 40 bronze. The disagreement is one bronze medal; the sources do not explain it.

For that reason, cite the 2023 total with its source rather than presenting either number as an uncontested figure. The distinction does not change the broad comparison: both accounts put Hangzhou ahead of 2026 in total medals and golds, and both report fourth place.

The government retrospective independently records India’s inaugural 1951 campaign as 51 medals—15 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze—and second place. It also describes the 2018 total of 70 as a national record at the time; the 2023 campaign later surpassed it.
What the numbers say—and do not say
The 2026 tally is a strong historical result, but it was not India’s best-ever Asian Games campaign by total medals or golds: both measures are below the 2023 figures reported by the two sources. The result is notable for matching the reported fourth-place finish while returning fewer medals than in Hangzhou.

Hindustan Times reported that India’s final golds included victories by wrestler Aman Sehrawat and the men’s cricket and hockey teams. It said the cricket team beat Pakistan by 19 runs and the hockey team defeated Malaysia 5–1; it also reported silver for Antim Phangal and bronze for Deepak Punia. These event details are attributed to that report.
