India’s 2026–27 rabi crops face a risk of difficult sowing and crop establishment where soil moisture and water supplies are limited. The concern follows rainfall deficits reported through early August and a government forecast that El Niño could strengthen in October–December 2026. These are warning signs, not evidence that crop losses have already occurred: outcomes will vary by region, irrigation access and the evolving weather.
Why rabi crops are at risk
Rabi crops are sown after the southwest monsoon, so the moisture left in the soil and the availability of stored water can affect sowing and early growth. A rainfall deficit can leave less water available; limited moisture can stress rain-fed crops and make crop establishment more difficult. The Ministry of Earth Sciences described these as possible effects of El Niño and rainfall deficits in an August parliamentary reply, not as measured losses in the 2026–27 rabi crop season. Ministry of Earth Sciences, 12 August 2026
What the official figures show—and when
In its 12 August 2026 reply, the Ministry reported that the India Meteorological Department’s updated monsoon forecast was 90% of the Long Period Average (LPA). Cumulative rainfall was 12% below the LPA through 5 August, and 47% of districts had deficient or large-deficient rainfall as of 2 August. These are early-season figures, not final monsoon totals or percentages of crop losses. Ministry of Earth Sciences, 12 August 2026

#1 Best Overall
- Cover Crop - Large premium packet of Driller Daikon Radish (Raphanus sativus longipinnatus) seeds. Winter-hardy and drought-tolerant cover crops can help cover the soil of your home garden beds during the off season. We've included enough seed in one packet to cover an 8' x 4' garden bed. Minimum of 10 g per packet (about 950 seeds).
- Productive - Daikon Radish germinates in 3-8 days when soil temps are 60-70°F. Plant 1/4” deep and space 3” apart in an area with full sun. This variety will grow 10-20” tall with a spread of 3-6”. Roots will mature in 50-60 days, plant in USDA zones 2-11.
- Soil Health - Driller Daikon is a tillage radish that cultivates and breaks up compact soil. Its taproots are extremely long, reaching 10-20" deep into the soil. These taproots gather and store nutrients that enrich the soil as they decompose. 2-3' wide leaves cover soil surface, keeping it mulched and weed free. Improving soil health through cover crop planting is an easy and low cost way of maintaining your garden from year to year.
- Easy to Grow - Instructions included on each packet. Plus, we are available to answer all your questions. If these seeds don’t germinate, we will happily make it right for you.
- Safe and Sustainable - Our operation is fully solar powered, and Sow Right Seeds has taken the Safe Seed Pledge to sell only fresh Non-GMO heirloom seeds for you and your family.
What is known about El Niño’s development
In a 30 July 2026 parliamentary reply, the Ministry said El Niño conditions were weak in June and moderate in July. It said they could strengthen further during October–December and might reach a “very strong” category. That is a forecast, not confirmation of how strong the event will become or what it will mean for any particular farming area. Ministry of Earth Sciences, 30 July 2026
The Ministry also stated that neither the World Meteorological Organization nor the India Meteorological Department officially defines a category called “Super El Niño.” The phrase should not be treated as an official forecast category.

- KOHLRABI SEEDS FOR PLANTING - Grow White Vienna kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var gongylodes), a cool season cole crop with pale green, rounded above-ground stems
- EARLY GARDEN HARVEST - White Vienna is a classic early variety, maturing in about 55 to 65 days with smooth bulb-like stems best picked young and tender
- WHITE GERMAN TURNIP - This unique cruciferous vegetable goes by many names including German Turnip, kohl-rabi, kohlrube, su hào, chou-rave, and stem cabbage
- GOOD FOR SMALL GARDENS - Upright plants grow about 8 to 12 inches tall and stay tidy while the rounded stems rise up above the soil, making harvest easy to see and simple to pick
- FAMILY OWNED USA SMALL BUSINESS – Heirloom non-GMO seeds from Survival Garden Seeds, a trusted American brand; always open-pollinated, untreated, and quality tested for garden success
El Niño is a large-scale climate driver, not a local crop forecast. Its effects depend on evolving ocean–atmosphere conditions and interact with local rainfall, soil moisture, water storage, crop calendars and irrigation.

A 3 October 2026 Hindustan Times report described low soil moisture and reservoir levels as potential risks to rabi sowing and crop prospects. Possible consequences include delayed sowing, reduced acreage or weaker yields, but these remain prospective outcomes. The evidence available does not establish current district-level damage, final reservoir storage figures or rabi sowing progress as of 3 October. Hindustan Times, 3 October 2026

Risk is unlikely to be uniform across India. A useful local assessment considers:
- Rainfall amount and timing: A seasonal average can obscure dry spells that matter during sowing or early growth.
- Soil moisture and stored water: Local field conditions and available water are more informative for a specific farm than a national rainfall figure.
- Crop and sowing calendar: The timing and moisture needs of the crop affect how a dry spell may matter.
- Irrigation access: Rain-fed fields and irrigated fields may face different levels of exposure.
Where to check for local guidance
The IMD’s agricultural meteorology site lists post-monsoon and October outlooks. Check its detailed regional values and current state or district agriculture advisories before making location-specific decisions; the national figures above cannot rank districts or identify which crops have suffered damage. - DEEP ROOT SYSTEM FOR SOIL AERATION & COMPACTION RELIEF: Our Daikon radish seeds for planting outdoors develop a deep taproot that breaks up compacted soil, improves water infiltration, and promotes soil aeration. This makes them ideal for use in gardens, food plots, and soil improvement projects like growing watermelon radish seeds.
- WINTER COVER CROP FOR SOIL HEALTH & EROSION CONTROL: Plant Daikon radish seeds 4-10 weeks before the first frost to form a protective canopy that shields the soil from erosion and helps retain essential nutrients. These radish seeds for planting are perfect for food plots, gardens, and soil health improvement.
- SUPPRESSES UNWANTED PLANTS & IMPROVES NUTRIENT RECYCLING: The dense foliage from our radish seeds naturally minimizes competition from other plants, while the radish taproot helps recycle vital nutrients back into the soil. Perfect for those looking to grow microgreens, sprouting seeds, or improve soil for future
- VERSATILE CROP WITH CULINARY BENEFITS: Grown from our Daikon radish seeds, these mild-flavored radishes are perfect for a variety of uses—whether eaten raw, cooked, or grown as microgreens. They’re an excellent addition to gardens, adding fresh, crisp radishes or radish sprouts to any meal you eat.
- EASY PLANTING & SEEDING GUIDE: Sow Daikon radish seeds at 8-10 lbs per acre or 1/2 lb per 1000 sq. ft. for smaller plots. These versatile radish seeds for planting outdoors grow best when covered with 1/4 - 1/2 inch of soil, making them ideal for gardening, food plots, or microgreen projects like seed sprouting kits.
A consumer soil-moisture meter may provide a reading at a sampled point, but it cannot resolve a regional water shortage or replace representative farm-scale sampling and agronomic advice. The Ministry’s identification of soil moisture as a risk factor is not an endorsement of a particular device.
