India’s benchmark Sensex and Nifty rebounded in early trade on Friday, October 9, 2026, after two sessions of sharp declines. A Press Trust of India report published by The New Indian Express put the Sensex at 71,876.10, up 292 points, and the Nifty at 22,310.40, up 84.60 points. These were early-trade readings, not the closing levels for the day.

What happened in early trading?

The 30-share BSE Sensex and 50-share NSE Nifty both moved higher after steep losses in the preceding two sessions, according to the PTI report. The figures capture the market early on October 9; they do not show how either index finished the session.

Why were TCS and IT shares leading?

The report associated TCS’s early gain of more than 4% with the company’s reported results: net profit increased 15% to Rs 13,884 crore. It also said TCS pointed to continued growth momentum. That is the report’s immediate explanation for the stock’s move; it does not establish that TCS results alone caused the broader index rebound.

Other named gainers included Infosys, HCL Tech and Tech Mahindra, alongside ITC, Adani Ports and HDFC Bank. The report’s list shows that the advance extended beyond IT, but it was not universal.

Which stocks were lagging?

Eternal, Bharat Electronics, Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank were among the shares the report identified as laggards. Their presence alongside rising stocks is a reminder that a higher benchmark reading does not mean every constituent rose.
