Indian equities rose on October 6, 2026, with buying in bank shares and Reliance Industries among the factors cited by market coverage. The New Indian Express recorded the Sensex up 120.22 points to 72,535.41 and the Nifty up 47.15 points to 22,603.10 in early trade. By the close, the Sensex had gained 0.95% and the Nifty 0.98%. Those are separate snapshots of the same session, not competing figures.

What happened in early trade and at the close?

The New Indian Express’s October 6 early-session report showed both benchmarks higher but gave no percentage change for that snapshot. PTI’s closing report later recorded a larger advance. The figures below keep those observation times distinct.

Observation Sensex Nifty
Early trade, The New Indian Express, October 6 Up 120.22 points to 72,535.41; percentage change not stated in the report. Up 47.15 points to 22,603.10; percentage change not stated in the report.
Close, PTI/ThePrint, October 6 Up 685.34 points, or 0.95%, to 73,067.81. Up 220.35 points, or 0.98%, to 22,776.10.

The closing numbers show the gains had widened after the early report. They describe one trading session and do not establish what the market would do next.

Why were markets higher?

Contemporary reports pointed to buying in banking shares and Reliance Industries, positive cues from global markets and easing crude prices as supportive factors. These are explanations offered at the time, not proof that any one factor caused the advance.

Brent crude was around USD 100.5 per barrel in The New Indian Express’s early-trade snapshot. PTI/ThePrint later reported Brent down 1.70% to USD 98.59 at the close, below USD 100. In the early-session report, WTI was around USD 89–90 per barrel. The reports linked lower oil prices with improved sentiment, but the different price observations reflect different times of day.

Analysts also noted countervailing risks. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, said: “Indian equity markets are expected to remain broadly steady, with easing crude prices providing some support to market sentiment.” Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth, said: “Positive overnight cues from global equities should support the opening, although the rise in the US 10-year Treasury yield to 5.31 per cent could limit follow-through by keeping foreign flows and emerging-market valuations under pressure.” These were attributed views in The New Indian Express’s October 6 report, not market guarantees.

Which stocks and sectors gained or fell?

Reported stock movers

In early trade, Trent was up more than 11%. The New Indian Express also listed Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance Industries and InterGlobe Aviation among Sensex gainers. Tech Mahindra, ITC, Mahindra & Mahindra and Infosys were among the reported laggards.

By the close, Trent had risen 12.78%, the largest gain among Sensex constituents, according to PTI/ThePrint. Kotak Mahindra Bank and Reliance Industries were also among the winners. The Economic Times, reporting on the session the following day, said Axis Bank gained 1.4% and Kotak Mahindra Bank rose 3.8%. These closing stock figures are distinct from the early-trade descriptions.

Broader market performance at the close

The advance extended beyond the large-cap benchmarks, though performance varied by sector. PTI/ThePrint reported the BSE SmallCap Select index up 1.25% and MidCap Select up 1%. Among sector indices, BSE Telecommunication rose 2.33%, Capital Goods 1.79%, Industrials 1.62%, FMCG 1.57%, Power and Oil & Gas 1.21% each, and Insurance 1.06%. Realty, IT, PSU Bank and several other listed indices ended lower.

The Economic Times also reported gains of 0.6–1.1% across financial, bank and private-bank indices. Index categories and measurement details differ across reports, so those ranges should not be treated as a single stock return.

What risks were still in view?

Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 4,699.14 crore on Monday, according to exchange data cited in both October 6 reports. That is the previous session’s flow, not an October 6 closing figure. Contemporary coverage also noted a US 10-year Treasury yield around 5.31%, which Hariselvan Radhakrishnan said could constrain follow-through by weighing on foreign flows and emerging-market valuations.

The Economic Times reported that an RBI policy decision was due Wednesday and that an ET poll expected a 25-basis-point increase to 5.50%. That was a forecast published ahead of the decision, not a confirmed policy outcome.

How to read this market report

The October 6 move is best read as a dated, one-session market recap. The indices rose from early trade through the close, while the cited factors—including bank buying, Reliance Industries, global cues and falling crude—were contemporaneous interpretations. Neither the index gains nor those explanations, by themselves, predict future returns or provide a basis for an investment decision.
