The Sensex and Nifty fell in early trade on Thursday, October 8, 2026, amid several pressures cited by a PTI report carried by The Tribune. The report linked the decline to a reported RBI rate hike and tighter policy stance, higher crude prices, foreign investor selling and weak global markets. The RBI policy details have not been confirmed by the official sources available here, so they should be treated as report-attributed claims, not independently verified facts.
How far did the Sensex and Nifty fall?
According to the PTI report carried by The Tribune, the 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 264.97 points to 72,408.15 in early trade, while the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 87.50 points to 22,507.65. These are intraday readings reported on October 8, not closing figures. Market levels can change quickly, and the report’s figures should be checked against current exchange records before reuse.
What pressures did the report identify?
The report described several factors coinciding with the decline rather than establishing a single cause:
- RBI policy expectations: The report said the central bank had raised its benchmark repo rate and moved to a tighter policy stance.
- Crude prices: Brent crude was reported 2.02% higher at $102.2 a barrel.
- Foreign investor selling: Foreign institutional investors reportedly sold equities worth ₹6,121.37 crore on Wednesday, October 7, citing exchange data.
- Weak overseas markets: The report noted that Asian markets were lower and U.S. markets had ended Wednesday lower.
Those commodity and flow figures are time-sensitive snapshots attributed to the report; they should not be read as current prices or ongoing flow totals.

What did the report say about the RBI?
The report said the RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, 2026, in what it described as the first hike in nearly four years. It also said the six-member Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously to shift the stance from “neutral” to “calibrated tightening,” suggesting further hikes were possible and near-term cuts were off the table.
These October policy details remain unconfirmed by the official RBI material available for this article. The RBI rates information found was dated July 2026 and showed a 5.25% repo rate; the official search result for an MPC resolution concerned its August 3–5, 2026 meeting. Neither establishes what the RBI decided on October 7. Readers should consult the contemporaneous RBI resolution before treating the reported hike, vote or stance change as confirmed.

Which stocks were reported as laggards and gainers?
The Tribune’s PTI report named ITC, Adani Ports, Bharat Electronics, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and InterGlobe Aviation among Sensex laggards. It named Tata Consultancy Services, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra and Infosys among gainers. The report did not provide a full stock-by-stock performance table in the material cited here.

What the early decline does—and does not—show
The reported fall captures the market at one point in the morning; it does not establish where either index finished the day. Nor does the report show that the reported RBI action, crude prices, foreign flows or global weakness alone caused the move. It presents them as concurrent pressures on investor sentiment.
