India have already secured the three-match ODI series against West Indies 2–0. The third and final match, scheduled for 3 October 2026 in New Chandigarh, gives India a chance to complete a clean sweep; West Indies can avoid a whitewash with a win. Shubman Gill is the central storyline after his unbeaten 223 powered India’s eight-wicket victory in the second ODI.

Gill made 223 not out from 133 balls in the second ODI, his second ODI double hundred, as India chased West Indies’ 405/7. India reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs and won by eight wickets; Gill was named player of the match. The innings puts him in focus as he leads India in a match being played in the state where his cricket career developed.

Hindustan Times’ preview described the Punjab setting as both an emotional homecoming and a significant moment in Gill’s leadership. It noted that he trained and shared insights with state cricketers at the PCA Stadium in Mohali before the series, and placed his growing role alongside the experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Gurkeerat Mann, Punjab Cricket Association Cricket Director and a former India and IPL cricketer who mentored Gill, praised his approach: “Shubman was born to play cricket for India. We have seen his steady growing stature as an international cricketer and also as a leader. He seemed to be focussed on his job and role in the team and loves to take the responsibility.” Mann also said, “After every series and tour he has things to tell and learn. I would say he is the best student of the game. Many more such top-notch performances are expected from him.” Those are Mann’s assessments, not independent measures of Gill’s standing.

What West Indies can bring into the final ODI
The visitors’ second-innings batting was a genuine threat: John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo each scored a century in the 405/7 total. Their task in the final match is to carry that top-order form into another contest and convert it into a win.
Hindustan Times identified Jayden Seales as the West Indies bowler who had tested India most in the series. Its tactical question was whether he would receive enough support from the other end to make that pressure count. That remains a pre-match assessment, not a confirmed prediction of how the final ODI would unfold.

India’s bowling and selection questions
The Hindustan Times preview said Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna were “out of the equation” and expected India to look to Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, with Mohammed Siraj expected to return and lead the pace attack. These were anticipated options ahead of the match; the available reports do not confirm the final XI.
Naman Dhir was another possible selection angle. He had not batted in the first two ODIs, and the preview suggested he might get an opportunity in the final game. Dhir described his expected role as batting at No. 6 or 7 and contributing as a fifth or sixth bowler when needed: “The communication was very simple. I will be batting at No. 6 or 7, where I have played in the IPL. The main role will be to contribute as the fifth or sixth bowler whenever the team needs me. If I can utilise that role well, it will be very good for the team.” That description does not confirm he played.

Dhir also spoke about the prospect of playing in Punjab: “There can’t be a better feeling than playing on your home ground. I have played a lot of cricket here and have grown up here. I never thought that after playing for Sher-e-Punjab, I would get the opportunity to play for the Indian team here. I have a very good feeling and a feeling of gratitude.”
What to expect from the New Chandigarh conditions
Hindustan Times expected a batting-friendly surface, pointing to the previous ODI’s combined total of more than 800 runs, and forecast less humidity than in the first two matches. Both points were pre-match expectations, not verified conditions for the third ODI. The second match’s reported totals—West Indies 405/7 and India 406/2—show why the preview anticipated another high-scoring game, but they do not guarantee a repeat.
