India have won all eight meetings with Pakistan in the men’s ODI Cricket World Cup through 2023. In the men’s T20 World Cup, India lead 8–1 after beating Pakistan by 61 runs in Colombo on 15 February 2026. Those are separate tournament records, and Pakistan’s 2021 T20 World Cup win means the rivalry has not been one-sided in both formats.
How the World Cup records compare
| Competition | Meetings | India wins | Pakistan wins | Tied matches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup, through 2023 | 8 | 8 | 0 | 0 |
| Men’s T20 World Cup, through 15 February 2026 | 9 | 8 | 1 | 0; one 2007 group match was tied and decided by a bowl-out in India’s favour |
The figures cover only matches between the teams in the named World Cup format. They do not describe their overall ODI or Test records. The latest ODI World Cup meeting was in 2023; the latest T20 World Cup meeting was in February 2026.
Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup: India won all eight meetings
India and Pakistan first met at the men’s 50-over World Cup in 1992. They played again in 1996, 1999, 2003, 2011, 2015 and 2019, with India winning each match. Their eighth meeting came in the 2023 group stage. The ICC’s account of the series lists the first seven editions, while its 2023 match report records the eighth: ICC World Cup history and 2023 match report.
Matches that shaped the record
- 2003: Sachin Tendulkar scored 98 as India chased Pakistan’s total and won by six wickets; Saeed Anwar had made a century for Pakistan.
- 2011 semi-final: Tendulkar made 85 and India won by 29 runs, advancing to the final.
- 2019: India scored 336/5 at Old Trafford, with Rohit Sharma making 140. In a rain-affected match decided under the DLS method, India won by 89 runs.
- 2023 group match: Pakistan fell from 155/2 to 191 all out in Ahmedabad. Rohit Sharma scored 86 as India won by seven wickets.
Men’s T20 World Cup: India lead 8–1 after the 2026 meeting
The teams met twice in the inaugural 2007 tournament. Their group match ended tied at 141 and was decided by a bowl-out, which India won; India then beat Pakistan in the final. A tied match resolved by a bowl-out is not a conventional win by runs or wickets, but it counts as a match victory for India in the tournament record. The ICC’s account of the T20 encounters covers the earlier meetings: ICC T20 World Cup head-to-head.

Key T20 World Cup meetings
- 2012, 2014 and 2016: India won each tournament meeting.
- 2021: Pakistan recorded its first and, through the latest meeting, only T20 World Cup win over India, by ten wickets.
- 2022: India won a last-ball chase in Melbourne, with Virat Kohli central to the comeback.
- 2024: India won the teams’ meeting.
- 15 February 2026: In Colombo, India made 175/7 and dismissed Pakistan for 114 in 18 overs, winning by 61 runs. Ishan Kishan scored 77 from 40 balls. The ICC’s pre-match summary put the record at India 7–1; adding this result makes it India 8–1 across nine T20 World Cup meetings. The Associated Press reported on the match and its setting: AP match report.
Why World Cup meetings carry unusual weight
World Cup results offer only one view of the rivalry. The ICC’s 2023 feature said Pakistan led the overall ODI record at that time, even as India held the World Cup advantage. Overall-format totals change over time, so that comparison should be read with its 2023 date rather than as a current all-format statistic: ICC’s 2023 context.
Meetings in major tournaments also stand out because India and Pakistan have not played regular bilateral series for years. The Associated Press reported in February 2026 that India had not toured Pakistan since 2008, and that political and military tensions contributed to the absence of bilateral cricket. The 2026 World Cup fixture was played in Colombo after a boycott threat and negotiations. That context helps explain the scarcity and intensity of the games, but it does not replace the sporting story.

The 2026 match also featured a specific protocol detail: AP reported that captains and players did not shake hands before or after that contest. This was reporting about that match, not evidence of a standing rule for every India–Pakistan fixture.

What the numbers say about the rivalry
The contrast is clear: India’s perfect eight-match record in the men’s ODI World Cup is different from the 8–1 record in the men’s T20 World Cup, where Pakistan won in 2021 and a 2007 group match was tied before India won the bowl-out. Knockout stakes have mattered too: the ODI meetings include the 2011 semi-final and the T20 meetings include the 2007 final. A high-profile match is not automatically a knockout, so the stage matters when comparing results.

The scale of attention is also reflected in figures the ICC cited in 2023 for the 2019 Manchester match: more than 700,000 ticket requests and 600 media requests, as well as a reported television audience of one billion. The ICC article did not identify the underlying data sources, so these are best treated as figures reported by the ICC rather than independently verified measurements: ICC coverage of the rivalry.
Before the February 2026 T20 meeting, India captain Suryakumar Yadav described the pressure as being “more about the occasion”; he made the remark at a pre-match press conference, not after the result. Rohit Sharma, reflecting on the 2007 final, called it his favourite T20 World Cup match against Pakistan and said India went on to win the tournament: Suryakumar’s pre-match remarks and Rohit on the 2007 final.
