If your Indian business receives a GST communication, first identify what kind of action it is, the tax period and issue involved, and the exact deadline and response method. Then gather records that support the figures in your returns, reconcile them before responding, and keep a complete copy of what you submit. Scrutiny, an audit, and other investigation actions can follow different procedures; an audit notice rule should not be assumed to apply to every GST communication.
Start by identifying the GST communication
Save the notice or request in its original form, including attachments and any electronic delivery details. Read it closely before collecting records: the period, issue, requested documents, deadline, and response channel determine what to prepare.
- Note the issuing authority, reference or form number, your GST registration, and the date and method of service.
- Record the tax period, subject under examination, each requested item, the response deadline, and how the authority expects the response to be sent.
- Verify the communication and issuing authority through appropriate official channels. Keep a record of any clarification you request or receive.
- Classify the action as return scrutiny, an audit, an information request, a summons, or another action. Do not assume that every communication is an audit notice.
If the request is unclear, the deadline is short, or you are unsure what is being asked, seek qualified Indian GST advice promptly and use a documented channel to request clarification. Do not ignore a summons or make unsupported admissions.

| Type of action | What to look for | Timing established by the cited source |
|---|---|---|
| Return scrutiny | A discrepancy may be communicated in FORM GST ASMT-10 under the cited assessment and audit rules. | The explanation period specified by the officer cannot exceed 15 days from service, under those rules. |
| Audit by tax authorities | The cited CGST Act text allows an audit at the business premises or at the officer’s office. An authorised officer may require access to books and documents and information needed to complete the audit. | At least 15 working days’ notice is prescribed for this audit. Findings, rights, obligations, and reasons must be communicated within 30 days after the audit concludes. |
| Other investigation action, including summons, search, or seizure | Check the exact action and instruction in the communication. The audit process does not, by itself, establish the procedure for these different actions. | A general deadline or complete set of procedures is not established by the cited materials for these actions. Follow the applicable communication and obtain advice if needed. |
The scrutiny and audit timings above come from the cited CBIC-hosted assessment and audit rules and CGST Act text, respectively. The 15-day scrutiny limit is not a general reply period for all GST notices. The audit notice requirement likewise should not be applied automatically to other enforcement actions.

Scope your collection to the period and issues in the communication. The aim is to show how the relevant return figures connect to underlying transactions, accounting records, and tax calculations—not to send every document your business has ever created.

When to involve a GST professional or lawyer
A qualified GST practitioner or chartered accountant may help assemble reconciliations and prepare a technical response. A tax lawyer may be appropriate if the matter involves a contested demand, compulsory questioning, a search or seizure, or possible prosecution. Get advice promptly when the deadline is unclear or the potential liability is significant. The correct approach depends on the actual communication and applicable law; the cited materials do not establish a universal response deadline or a complete statement of taxpayer remedies.
