India beat defending champions China 1–0 in the women’s hockey gold-medal match at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on 2 October 2026. Lalremsiami scored in the 10th minute, goalkeeper Savita saved a penalty stroke, and India secured both its first Asian Games women’s hockey title since 1982 and qualification for the LA 2028 Olympics.
How India beat China in the final
India made its early opportunity count, then defended the narrow lead against sustained Chinese pressure. The match’s only goal came in the 10th minute: captain Salima Tete began the move, Sakshi Rana carried it forward, and Lalremsiami finished with a reverse-stick strike. It was Lalremsiami’s 200th senior international appearance.
China came close to equalising when it earned a penalty stroke in the second quarter, but Savita saved it. India’s defence continued to protect the advantage as the match progressed, and China could not turn its attacking pressure into a goal.

Possession and circle pressure
Hockey India reported that China had 55 percent possession and eight circle penetrations to India’s four in the first half. By the end of the third quarter, China had recorded 21 circle entries to India’s nine. Those figures describe pressure in this match; they do not change the result: India scored once and kept a clean sheet.

How the teams reached the final
Both India and China were unbeaten in the tournament before the final, according to Hockey India’s 1 October preview. Their semi-finals took different paths:
| Team | Semi-final route |
|---|---|
| India | Beat South Korea 2–0, with goals from Ishika and Salima Tete. |
| China | Drew 0–0 with Japan, then won the shootout 4–2. |
India had also drawn 0–0 with China at the 2026 World Cup in Amsterdam, according to Hockey India’s pre-final account. Before the Asian Games final, India chief coach Sjoerd Marijne said China were “a very good team” and noted their experience. That was his assessment before the match, not a reaction to the result.
