India’s auto market is growing quickly, but September 2026’s record retail surge is not a reliable run rate: buyers had postponed purchases before GST 2.0 took effect late in September 2025, leaving an unusually weak comparison month. A reported 25-basis-point repo-rate increase could add pressure to affordability, but its effect on any individual buyer depends on how lenders price loans and how the loan is structured. The key question is whether high registrations can continue as comparisons strengthen and dealer stocks rise.
How strong is auto demand in India?
The industry entered FY2026–27 after a record financial year across major vehicle categories. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reported that each category reached its highest annual sales in seven years in FY2025–26. Its wholesale figures show a further acceleration in the April–June 2026 quarter, though the growth rates compare with the same quarter a year earlier.

These are SIAM industry sales, which measure manufacturers’ wholesale dispatches rather than dealer registrations. SIAM said lower GST rates, softer financing costs, new models and a low base contributed to Q1’s strong showing; it also identified geopolitical developments and monsoon progress as uncertainties. SIAM’s FY2025–26 release and Q1 FY2026–27 release provide the category totals and context.
Why September’s growth rate needs a base-effect warning
GST 2.0’s new rates took effect on 22 September 2025, according to contemporaneous reporting. Because the change arrived near month-end, some buyers delayed purchases while waiting for the lower rates. Demand then gathered after implementation, alongside festive buying. That made September 2025 an unusually weak comparison for September 2026, while October 2025 onward included fuller months under the new rates and purchases that had been deferred.

FADA figures reported by Autocar Professional put total vehicle registrations in September 2026 at 2,536,920, up 31.82% year over year and 4.69% above August. In the same report, first-half FY2026–27 retail stood at 15,512,319 vehicles, up 20.77% year over year. Times of India rounded the first-half growth to about 21%; FADA president Sai Giridhar said the first five months, excluding September, had grown around 17%. The September print therefore stands out even within an already strong half-year. Autocar Professional’s October 8 report and Times of India’s October 6 report attribute the unusually strong comparison to the GST transition.
In the Times of India’s FADA figures, September retail registrations varied by category:

A high year-over-year growth rate can fall even when monthly sales remain substantial: the comparison is against a stronger month, not necessarily because fewer vehicles are being sold than before. So a lower October growth rate would not, on its own, demonstrate a contraction in demand. Festival timing and vehicle availability can also shift deliveries between months. Financial Express’s October 1 account likewise cautioned that the GST-related base would make growth harder to sustain from October.

Retail registrations and factory dispatches tell different stories
Retail registrations are vehicles reaching customers through dealers; wholesales are manufacturers’ dispatches to dealers. The two measures can diverge when inventory is being built or run down, so they should not be treated as interchangeable measures of consumer demand.
That distinction matters for passenger vehicles in September 2026: reported wholesales were 463,081, up 21.4% year over year, while FADA-reported retail registrations were 427,213, up 32.10%. The different totals and growth rates reflect different stages of the sales channel as well as the measures’ respective comparison bases. Financial Express reported the wholesale figure; Times of India reported the retail figure.
Dealer stocks are another reason to watch the conversion from dispatches to registrations. FADA figures reported by Autocar Professional and Times of India put passenger-vehicle inventory at roughly 43–45 days at September-end, about five days above August-end. Around 60% of passenger-vehicle dealers reported higher stock, while FADA’s preferred benchmark was about 21 days. Inventory is not a direct forecast of a sales decline, but rising stock alongside dispatches that outpace registrations would be a signal to examine discounts, bookings and sales conversion more closely.

What a repo-rate rise can—and cannot—tell buyers
Autocar Professional reported that the Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on 7 October 2026. That figure is reported by the publication; it should not be read as a verified statement of every bank’s current vehicle-loan rate or as proof that every existing loan repriced immediately.
The repo rate is a policy rate. Banks and finance companies set customer lending rates and determine how policy changes pass through. A buyer’s monthly payment also depends on the loan principal, term, lender pricing and whether the rate is fixed or variable. The rate move may matter to affordability and expectations, but the repo rate alone does not establish a particular borrower’s EMI.
To illustrate the scale, the Autocar Professional report attributes to Upstox Research an example in which a ₹8.6 lakh loan over five years at 9% would see its EMI rise from ₹17,852 to ₹17,957—a ₹105 monthly increase. This is an illustration under those stated loan assumptions, not a universal estimate of the impact on vehicle buyers. Further rate increases could create more pressure, but forecasts of additional tightening are not settled policy.

Affordability, prices and differences between vehicle segments
Financing costs are only one part of the affordability picture. The same Autocar Professional report says vehicle prices had risen about 3% over the prior year, attributing the figure to Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles managing director Shailesh Chandra. A vehicle’s purchase price, running costs, loan terms and availability all affect the decision to buy, so a small EMI change should not be assessed in isolation.
The growth is not uniform across vehicle types: in Q1, three-wheelers had the fastest year-over-year increase among SIAM’s categories, while passenger vehicles had the largest absolute quarterly volume. September retail growth was also different by segment. The GST reporting describes small cars, commuter two-wheelers, tractors and commercial vehicles as prominent affordability beneficiaries, but the exact tax treatment depends on vehicle classification and specifications. The available reporting does not provide a complete official rate schedule, so a particular model’s GST rate should not be inferred from the broad category descriptions.

The available figures show strong sales and registrations, but do not isolate the tax change from financing costs, new models, festive timing, supply or other influences. What to watch as comparisons get tougher
Rather than extrapolating September’s growth rate, assess the market through several measures together:
- Like-for-like growth: Compare each month with its year-ago counterpart and note whether that base was affected by the GST transition. Check sequential changes too, without treating a single month as a trend.
- Retail versus wholesale: Track registrations alongside factory dispatches. A widening gap can point to a change in dealer inventory rather than an equal change in customer purchases.
- Inventory and conversion: Watch dealer stock, bookings, pending orders and discounting alongside registrations to judge whether supply is moving through showrooms.
- Segments separately: Passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles have different buyers and demand drivers; an all-vehicle total can obscure those differences.
- Household affordability: Consider vehicle price movements and lender-specific loan rates together, rather than using the repo rate alone as a proxy for a buyer’s monthly cost.
- Timing and supply: Festival dates, monsoon progress, model launches and vehicle availability can influence when deliveries occur and how they compare year over year.
The evidence supports a strong market entering FY2026–27, not a guarantee that the extraordinary growth rates will persist. A cooling percentage after September could reflect a tougher comparison; sustained registrations supported by healthy conversion and controlled inventories would be stronger evidence that underlying demand remains firm.
