There is no universal winner between sea and air freight from India to Africa. Choose by comparing a shipment’s complete collection-to-delivery cost and time for the specific origin, destination, cargo and deadline—not by comparing a vessel schedule with a flight duration or a headline freight rate.
Why the destination and delivery point matter
“Africa” is not one shipping lane. India’s Ministry of Commerce describes its Sub-Saharan Africa division as covering 48 countries across East, West, Central and Southern Africa. That remit is not a substitute for identifying the actual destination country: a port or airport call does not establish that a carrier serves the consignee’s address or that inland delivery is available.
Start with the origin postcode and likely Indian gateway, the destination port or airport, and the final delivery address. Include any inland haulage, cross-border movement, port or airport handling, customs clearance and onward delivery. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ Sagarmala material notes that cargo-generating centres in India are often inland, and that distance to ports can raise logistics cost and delivery-time variability.

The ministry says more than 90% of India’s trade by volume moves by maritime routes. That broad national statistic provides context for the role of sea transport; it does not show that sea is the right mode, or more available, for a particular India–Africa shipment.

Sea freight and air freight compared
Request comparable, door-to-door offers for the same cargo, origin, destination, delivery scope and quote date. Ask each provider to identify what is included and excluded; a port-to-port rate cannot be compared fairly with an air quote that includes delivery and clearance.
| Decision factor | What to check for sea freight | What to check for air freight |
|---|---|---|
| Total cost | Ask for the full charge from collection through final delivery, including inland transport, origin and destination handling, customs support, surcharges, insurance and delivery charges. | Ask for the same complete scope. Confirm how the provider calculates chargeable weight, and whether handling, customs support, insurance and final delivery are included. |
| Elapsed time | Get the collection-to-delivery estimate, including booking cut-off, consolidation if applicable, sailing, any transshipment, clearance and final-mile delivery. | Get the collection-to-delivery estimate, including booking cut-off, consolidation if applicable, flight connections, clearance and final-mile delivery. Flight time alone is not delivery time. |
| Schedule and capacity | Check current sailing dates, routing, direct calls or transshipment, space and the provider’s response if a sailing changes or is missed. | Check current departure options, connections, available capacity and how the provider handles a missed connection or schedule change. |
| Cargo acceptance and handling | Give the provider the commodity, dimensions, weight, volume and value, plus fragility, temperature or other special-handling requirements. Confirm acceptance for the selected service. | Provide the same cargo information and confirm acceptance, packaging and any special-handling requirements with the carrier or forwarder. |
| Destination logistics | Confirm the port, local clearance process, road access and whether the quoted service covers the actual delivery address, including any cross-border leg. | Confirm the airport, local clearance process, road access and whether the quoted service covers the actual delivery address, including any cross-border leg. |
| Risk and working capital | Compare insurance terms, potential delay or storage charges, payment timing and the cost to the business of inventory in transit. | Compare insurance terms, potential delay or storage charges, payment timing and the cost to the business of inventory in transit. |
Evaluate air when the required arrival date or cargo characteristics make its quoted total cost worthwhile. Evaluate sea when an available service meets the business’s end-to-end delivery requirement and the complete quote fits the budget. Those are decision rules, not a promise that either mode is always faster, cheaper or more reliable.

What current India–East Africa sea announcements establish
Two carrier announcements in August 2026 describe weekly sea-service options connecting India with East Africa:

- ONE: Its 26 August 2026 notice announced weekly IMM and IMD India–East Africa services effective in September 2026.
These announcements establish that carriers announced scheduled options; they do not establish the routing, sailing date, available space, transit for a particular booking, rate or inland delivery arrangement for your shipment. Confirm the live schedule, exact port calls, connections, cut-offs, capacity and quote with the carrier or forwarder before committing. Do not infer service to other African destinations from an East Africa route.

Air cargo procedures are not an end-to-end speed guarantee
Air cargo has its own handling and customs steps. In an April 2025 announcement, India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) described a transshipment permit fee waiver that took effect on 24 April 2025, temporary import of air Unit Load Devices (ULDs) under a continuity bond, and online filing through ICEGATE. These are operational provisions, not evidence that an air shipment will arrive sooner or cost less from collection to delivery.
Before relying on a procedure, confirm that it applies to the shipment and parties involved and check for later notices. Ask the provider to explain which party handles applicable filings, transfer arrangements and documentation, and to include any related charges or exclusions in the quote.

Check trade rules separately from the freight mode
A sea or air booking does not determine the shipment’s import requirements, duty treatment or eligibility for a trade preference. India’s Ministry of Commerce says the India–Mauritius CECPA entered into force on 1 April 2021 and that India–SACU PTA negotiations resumed in 2025 after earlier stalled negotiations. These are trade-policy facts, not freight routes or guarantees of preferential treatment for a particular product. Ask a qualified customs broker or the relevant authority to verify current import rules, documents, tariff classification and any applicable preference for the specific goods and destination.

A Government of India account dated 31 July 2026 documents geopolitical disruption affecting international routes, cargo movement, port operations, freight and insurance costs. It also reports relief measures with expiry dates, including measures that had already ended by the time of that account. Treat this as evidence that conditions can change, not as confirmation of current relief or a current rate.

For a time-sensitive or high-value shipment, ask providers for the quote date and validity, routing, applicable surcharges, insurance terms and the process if service changes. Verify whether any temporary measure is still in force before building it into the shipment budget.
Quick Recap
How to request a useful quote
- Define the route: Give the origin postcode and preferred gateway, destination country, destination port or airport, and complete delivery address. State whether a cross-border or other inland leg is required.
- Describe the cargo: Provide the commodity, gross weight, dimensions, volume, value, shipment frequency and any regulated, fragile, temperature-controlled or other special-handling characteristics. Ask the provider to confirm service acceptance.
- Set the delivery requirement: Give the date by which the goods must arrive and say whether that means arrival at the port or airport, cleared delivery, or delivery to the final address.
- Specify the quote scope: State whether customs clearance, insurance, inland transport and final delivery should be included. Identify the agreed delivery terms or Incoterm, if applicable, so providers price the same responsibilities.
- Ask for the operating details: Request the proposed routing, direct and connecting legs, collection and booking cut-offs, estimated collection-to-delivery time, capacity status, inclusions, exclusions, quote validity and response to missed connections or schedule changes.
- Compare like with like: Put each offer beside the same shipment specification. Separate transport charges from handling, customs-related costs, inland delivery, surcharges and insurance; do not compare different delivery scopes as if they were equivalent.
- Verify before booking: Confirm the latest schedule, space, destination handling and import requirements with the provider and a qualified broker or relevant authority. Recheck the quote if the route, cargo details or booking date changes.
