Chrome Incognito mode limits what the browser keeps on your device after a session. It does not hide your activity from the websites you visit, from the organizations that run the network you are connected to, such as an employer, school or internet provider, or from anyone who can inspect the device itself. Google’s own help page says it plainly: “While Incognito can help keep your browsing private on your device, it doesn’t make you invisible.” (Google Chrome Help, Browse in Incognito mode – Computer, checked October 2026.)
What Incognito actually removes
Incognito is a local, session-level feature. While Incognito windows are open, Chrome keeps cookies and site data temporarily so that pages work as expected. When every Incognito window is closed, Chrome removes that session data and the record of the sites you visited in that session. The key detail is the word “every”: if one Incognito window stays open, the session continues, and the data from earlier tabs is still there. Closing the tab you were looking at does not end the session.

Two of these rows matter most for a shared computer. Downloads are the most overlooked: a file saved during an Incognito session sits in the normal downloads location, where the next user can find it without any history to search. Bookmarks work the same way, because they are saved to your Chrome profile rather than to the session.

Websites still see your visits
Incognito does not stop a website from receiving your requests. Google’s help page states that sites may collect information even when you are not signed in. A site you visit in Incognito can therefore record what it receives from your browser, and it can associate that information with a request, even though Chrome itself does not keep a local copy of the visit.
Signing into a website changes what the site knows
The biggest practical mistake is signing into an account during an Incognito session. Once you sign in to a website, that site knows it is you, and it can connect everything you do after that point to your account. Closing the Incognito window does not undo this, because the account history lives on the website’s servers rather than in Chrome. If you sign in to a retailer, a social network or a streaming service while in Incognito, that service keeps the same history it would keep for a normal session.

Chrome sign-in is blocked, but Google web sign-in is not
Chrome Incognito prevents you from signing in to your Chrome account, so your browser sync does not apply to the session. Google’s sign-in documentation still allows you to sign in to Google web services, such as Gmail, from an Incognito window. Signing into Gmail in Incognito therefore links that session to your Google account in the same way a normal browser window would. The browser feature does not change that.
Third-party cookies are blocked by default
Current Chrome Help notes that third-party cookies are blocked by default in Incognito. You can allow them temporarily for a particular site that needs them. This is a useful detail for reducing cross-site tracking in a session, but it is a feature setting rather than a guarantee. It does not stop a site from seeing what it receives directly from your browser, and the help page does not claim that websites are unable to track visitors by other means.

Network operators can still observe activity
Google’s Chrome Help explicitly names schools, employers and internet service providers as organizations that manage networks and may be able to observe activity in Incognito. Incognito has no effect on this. Your browser window can be private from the next user of your laptop and still be visible to the network that carries the traffic.
The help page does not specify exactly which details a network operator can read in every setup. Whether an operator sees full page addresses, only the sites you connect to, or only traffic volume depends on how the network is configured, whether a connection is encrypted, and what the operator has installed. Treat Incognito as no protection at all against the network you are connected to, and do not assume that a particular detail is hidden from it unless you have checked the setup yourself.

The shared family laptop: what Incognito does for the next person
This is the situation Incognito handles well. If you use a shared device and do not want the next person who opens Chrome to see the pages you visited, Incognito removes that visited-site record and the session’s temporary data when you close all Incognito windows. It is a practical way to keep casual browsing out of the regular history.

- Open your downloads folder and delete any file you saved during the session.
- Open Chrome’s bookmark manager and remove any bookmark you created during the session.
- Check that every Incognito window is closed, not only the one you were using.
- Sign out of any website or Google web service you signed into during the session, if you do not want that account to remain active on the device.
Incognito also does not protect against other ways a device owner might see your activity. Google’s documentation does not establish guarantees against monitoring software, device-level access, or employer-managed devices, so do not rely on Incognito in those settings.
When Incognito is useful and when it is not
- Useful: keeping a session out of the regular browser history on a shared computer, avoiding a site’s cookies or logins from staying in your normal profile, and keeping a temporary search from appearing in later history.
- Not useful: hiding activity from your employer, school or internet provider, avoiding a website that you have signed into, preventing monitoring software from recording activity, or keeping downloads and bookmarks out of the device.
Google’s Chrome Enterprise documentation also distinguishes private browsing from other managed browsing modes. Those distinctions matter for organizations that set policy on shared devices, and the product behavior and policy controls can change. The Enterprise page is at Allow private browsing. The guest-mode behavior is not stated in the Incognito help page, so do not assume it matches Incognito on every point.
The Bottom Line
Incognito mode keeps a browsing session off the regular history on a shared Chrome profile. It does not make you anonymous. Websites still receive your requests and link activity to your account once you sign in, employers, schools and internet providers that manage the network may observe activity, and downloads and bookmarks remain on the device after you close the window.
