The Maker Shed Game of Life Board was a modular LED project that displayed Conway’s Game of Life: each 3-by-3-inch module showed a 4×4 grid of 16 LEDs, and multiple modules could be connected to make a larger display. Make: described the kit in an article published August 15, 2011; its archived description does not establish whether the kit is still available today.
What the Game of Life board is
Conway’s Game of Life is a cellular automaton: a grid of cells changes from one generation to the next according to simple rules based on neighboring cells. The Maker Shed kit was a physical display for that process, not a conventional turn-based board game. Make: characterized it as a simple electronic project that plays Conway’s Game of Life.
The official Make: archive lists the project under “In the Maker Shed: Game of Life Board,” credits Maker Shed, and dates it August 15, 2011: Make: archive entry.
How the modules display and connect
According to the 2011 Make: project description, each module is 3 by 3 inches and carries 16 LEDs in a 4×4 grid. Modules can be connected in any configuration to form a larger board. The description does not specify a maximum number of modules or explain the physical connector design, so those details should not be assumed.

Power and controls
The described kit uses two AA batteries, which are not included. Make: also says the design can be modified to run from USB or a wall adapter, but the archived feature information gives no voltage, polarity, wiring instructions, or safety procedure. That means USB or wall power is a modification—not a documented plug-in alternative—and a reader should not connect an arbitrary supply based on the summary alone.
The on/off button also resets the display. The feature list says the board automatically regenerates if its colony dies out or stagnates, and that the kit is backward-compatible with older versions. It does not define “older versions” or identify specific compatible revisions.

Was it a good first electronics project?
Make: presented the kit as easy to make and an excellent first electronics project, and described workshops in which participants joined their completed modules. Those are the publisher’s descriptions of the project, not independent build-test findings. The accessible archive summary does not establish the assembly sequence, parts list, soldering requirements, microcontroller, firmware, or detailed electrical specifications; use a complete, version-matched instruction set before attempting a build or modification.
What is known about availability now
The documented item is a historical 2011 Maker Shed product description. The archive confirms what the project was presented as, but does not verify current retail availability, ongoing support, or compatibility of present-day parts with the original design. If you find a listing, check that it is specifically this Maker Shed kit and that it includes usable instructions and the correct components before treating it as the same product.
