The old World of Warcraft prairie dog looks oddly pointy-headed and hunched. Rebekah Valentine’s October 2, 2026 Kotaku feature makes that clumsy little creature the star of an affectionate appreciation: “I love it.”
Why the prairie dog stands out in Mulgore
Valentine begins with a personal connection: Mulgore’s open plains remind her of her home state of Kansas. While questing there as a tauren, she notices the prairie dogs scattered across the landscape. The comparison is her way into the scene, not a claim that the two places are alike in every respect.
Then comes the creature itself. The older model has a pointy head and a hunched, awkward silhouette. Valentine’s imagined reaction—“What happened to you, little guy? Why is your head…pointy like that?”—captures the joke: this is not the polished, immediately adorable version of a prairie dog.

| Version | How Valentine describes the prairie dog |
|---|---|
| Original WoW-based version, including WoW: Forever | Pointy-headed, hunched and awkward-looking; Valentine affectionately calls it ugly. |
| Later retail WoW | Blizzard replaced it with a model Valentine considers more like a cute prairie dog. |
The contrast is a matter of visual style and personal taste, not a technical comparison: Valentine’s feature gives no polygon counts, production details or date for the replacement. Her point is that the awkward original still has its own charm, and she says so plainly: “I love it.”

Where the feature says to find the pet
Valentine reports that Halpa sells a prairie dog pet for 50 silver in Thunder Bluff, near the entrance to Hunter’s Rise. That is the feature’s account of the game version it discusses, not independently verified current guidance; check the vendor in your version of WoW before relying on the location or price.
