If Windows still starts and you want to repair it without losing your apps and settings, begin with the repair reinstall. Choose a clean install only when you want a fresh start or the repair routes have not fixed the problem. A clean install removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings, so a separate, verified backup has to come first. The phrase “in-place upgrade” covers more than one job, and the keep option you select on the final Setup screen decides what survives.
Two different jobs under one name
“In-place upgrade” is used for two distinct operations. The first is moving to a later Windows version, where Setup migrates your files and apps to the new release. The second is reinstalling the Windows version you already have over the running system, which repairs system files and components while leaving your setup in place. Installation media used from inside Windows can perform either job, depending on the version and the route you choose.
A clean install is a different operation. You boot from installation media, and Setup removes files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Microsoft presents it as an advanced option for a fresh start.

Decision guide
Windows starts, but system files or components are damaged
Use the “Fix problems using Windows Update” option in Windows 11. It reinstalls the current version and keeps your apps, files, and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and to the internet for the whole process, because the repair downloads the components it needs.
You need to reinstall from media but want to keep part of your setup
Start Setup from inside the running Windows installation rather than booting from the drive. Choose the option that matches what you want to keep. “Keep personal files and apps” preserves the most. “Keep personal files only” retains your documents and similar data but removes apps and settings. “Keep nothing” removes both.
You want a fresh start, or other recovery options did not solve the problem
Use a clean install from boot media. It is the only route in this list that leaves no previous apps, settings, or manufacturer customizations behind, which is why it is the right choice for a PC with a long-standing fault that repairs have not cleared. Confirm your backup first, because nothing from the old installation is kept.

You want to reset without creating boot media
“Reset this PC” offers “Keep my files” and “Remove everything.” “Keep my files” retains personal files but removes apps and settings, so it is not equivalent to a repair that keeps everything. Choose it when you are prepared to reinstall your applications afterwards.
You suspect malware
Run a malware scan before you reinstall. If the problem continues after the scan, reinstall using installation media and choose the clean installation option, since a repair can keep the very files that were affected.
Before you start
- Back up important files and check that you can open the backup. Microsoft recommends a backup before any recovery or installation. An external drive is one option, but keep the backup separate from the installation media.
- Create installation media if you may need a clean install. Microsoft says a USB flash drive can be used to install or reinstall Windows.
- Locate your BitLocker recovery key if BitLocker is enabled. Microsoft says the key is needed for most recovery options.
- Check that the edition matches your license. Microsoft says the edition being reinstalled must match the digital license on the device.
- Contact your IT department if the PC is managed by a work or school. Managed devices may have policies that affect recovery.
Running Setup from inside Windows
- Confirm your backup is complete and readable on another device.
- Insert the USB flash drive or mount the Windows ISO, open the drive in File Explorer, and run setup.exe.
- Follow the prompts until you reach the Ready to install screen. Check that the edition shown matches your license.
- Select Change what to keep, then choose Keep personal files and apps, Keep personal files only, or Keep nothing. The choices you see depend on the version and route.
- Confirm the selection and select Install. Keep the PC plugged in and connected throughout.
Setup restarts the PC several times. Do not interrupt the process, even if the screen appears idle for long periods.
Upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and the rollback window
When you upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, Microsoft’s support FAQ says files and data move by default, and it recommends a backup before installation. After the upgrade, the device can return to Windows 10 for 10 days while keeping the migrated files and data. The FAQ page does not state a year for this information. After the 10-day period ends, returning to Windows 10 requires a clean install and a manual restore from your backup.

This rollback window applies to an operating-system version upgrade only. It does not describe a same-version repair reinstall, which is a different operation.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Since that date, Windows 10 no longer receives free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes through Windows Update. If you are still running Windows 10, confirm your edition and whether any paid extended-support option applies to your device before deciding between an upgrade and a fresh install.
If the problem continues
- If a repair fails or the same fault returns, move to a clean install from installation media rather than repeating the repair.
- If Setup asks for a BitLocker recovery key, enter the key you located before you started.
- If the edition shown during Setup does not match your license, stop and resolve the license question before reinstalling.
Once the fresh install is complete, restore your files from the verified backup and reinstall your applications individually.
