Three cybersecurity developments reported in October 2025 addressed different audiences: WhatsApp announced a way to protect chat backups with passkeys, Russian authorities said they had arrested people suspected of involvement with Meduza malware, and Mastercard introduced a threat-intelligence service for financial institutions. The arrest account remains an allegation, while Mastercard’s performance figures are company-reported claims.
WhatsApp announced passkey-encrypted chat backups
On October 30, 2025, WhatsApp announced that users would be able to protect chat backups with passkeys. Rather than requiring a separate password or a 64-digit encryption key, the feature lets a user authenticate with a fingerprint, face, or screen-lock code. WhatsApp described the change as a way to make encrypted backups easier to access without giving up their protection. Meta’s announcement explains the feature.
WhatsApp said the rollout would happen gradually over the following weeks and months. That was the plan at announcement; availability on particular devices or in particular regions has not been established here. The announcement also does not establish compatibility with specific password managers.

Mastercard introduced a threat-intelligence service for financial institutions
In October 2025, Mastercard announced Mastercard Threat Intelligence, a service intended for issuing and acquiring institutions. It combines Mastercard’s payment-fraud insights and network visibility with threat intelligence from Recorded Future. It is an institutional service, not a consumer security product. Mastercard’s October 28, 2025 Europe announcement credited Datos Insights with a finding that 57% of global fraud leaders said they learned of cyber breaches only after fraud losses began. Mastercard also said a six-month market test helped ecosystem partners identify and take down malicious domains that had affected nearly 9,500 ecommerce sites and were linked to an estimated $120 million in fraud. The latter figures describe Mastercard’s company-reported test results and estimates, not a general performance guarantee or independent evaluation.
