Variable layer height lets a slicer use thinner layers where a model’s curves or slopes need finer vertical detail and thicker layers where the contour changes little. That can preserve detail while reducing print time compared with using fine layers everywhere—but it does not maximize quality and speed in every respect, and the result depends on the model and settings.
What variable layer height changes
A slicer turns a 3D model into stacked horizontal layers. With a constant fine layer height, those layers can represent sloping surfaces with smaller visible steps, but the printer must lay down more layers. Taller layers reduce the layer count and can shorten a print, while making vertical steps more noticeable on curved or angled surfaces.
Variable layer height allocates vertical resolution according to the model’s shape: thinner layers where the contour benefits from them, and thicker layers where they are less useful. It is a tradeoff improvement, not a blanket quality upgrade. It cannot remove all layer lines or fix unrelated issues such as poor calibration.

It does not add detail to features that lie in the XY plane, parallel to the build plate. For those features, nozzle diameter is the relevant factor to investigate. Prusa’s guide to layers and perimeters explains this distinction and related settings.

Which geometry benefits most
Adaptive layers are most useful when the same model has both areas that need fine vertical steps and areas that can be printed more coarsely. Sloped surfaces and curves can benefit from thinner layers; tall, nearly vertical flat regions often gain less from them. A model made mostly of flat horizontal surfaces may offer little time or appearance benefit.
- Curved or sloped contours: thinner layers can make the stepped outline less pronounced.
- Mostly vertical walls: thicker layers may save time where the outer contour changes little.
- XY-oriented text or small bed-parallel features: adaptive Z resolution will not make these details finer.
Because the feature responds to geometry, preview both the layer profile and the sliced contours rather than assuming every model will improve.

How to use variable layer height in PrusaSlicer
- Select the model in the 3D view, then activate the variable layer height tool from the top toolbar. The slicer displays contour lines and opens the variable-height panel.
- Choose Adaptive to calculate a profile using the Quality/Speed setting. Use Smooth to soften transitions. Select Keep min when you want the smallest layer heights to remain unchanged.
- Inspect the profile and preview. You can edit the automatically generated profile or begin manually: left-click to add detail, right-click to remove detail, and use the mouse wheel to change the edited area. The panel highlights the affected region.
- Slice again and check the resulting contours and time estimate. All instances of the selected object are affected by the variable-height edits.
Start with a base layer-height profile close to the height used for most of the print. Layer-height profiles can also change extrusion width, so review the sliced result rather than treating the displayed height curve as the only check. Prusa documents the tool’s controls and editing workflow in its variable layer height guide.
How to use adaptive layers in UltiMaker Cura
- Switch Cura to Custom mode.
- Search the settings for adaptive layers and enable the feature if it is available in your installed release.
- Review the three controls: maximum variation, variation step size, and layer threshold. Cura analyzes outer-wall slope and angle, using finer layers for curves and thicker ones on vertical flat regions.
- Slice the model and inspect the preview and estimated print time. Adjust the parameters only if the profile is not appropriate for the model.
UltiMaker says its default parameters are usually adequate, though they can be adjusted for a particular model. Setting names and availability can vary by Cura release; the UltiMaker article describes the feature in a historical version context, so check your installed interface. The vendor describes Cura as free in its adaptive-layers explanation.

PrusaSlicer and Cura compared
| Capability | PrusaSlicer | UltiMaker Cura |
|---|---|---|
| How the profile is created | Automatic adaptive profile, manual editing, or a combination. | Automatic geometry analysis of outer-wall slope and angle. |
| Controls described by the vendor | Quality/Speed setting, smoothing, and an option to keep minimum heights. | Maximum variation, variation step size, and layer threshold. |
| Editing and preview | Contour preview; left-click adds detail, right-click removes it, and the mouse wheel changes the edited area. | Adjustable adaptive-layer parameters; the cited feature guide does not describe equivalent point-by-point editing controls. |
| Release caveat | Check the profile and sliced result for your printer and nozzle settings. | Check your installed release because setting names and availability may differ from the version context of the vendor article. |
These documented differences do not establish that one slicer produces better results. Choose based on the controls available in your installed version and whether its preview and time estimate suit your model.
Check nozzle and first-layer constraints
Prusa advises keeping layer height below 80% of nozzle diameter; for a 0.4 mm nozzle, it gives approximately 0.32 mm as an example. Prusa also says its slicer will report an error if layer height exceeds nozzle diameter. Treat this as Prusa’s guidance rather than a universal rule for every slicer or printer. Confirm the limits for your printer profile and the nozzle you have configured. Prusa’s layer and perimeter documentation also notes that the first layer may be thicker to help adhesion; changing it may require first-layer calibration.

What time savings to expect
There is no general time-saving percentage established across printers and models. In one UltiMaker-published example, adaptive layers reduced print time by 10% for a Poly-Tainer bottle prototype compared with a constant 0.2 mm “Fast” profile, while giving greater detail to areas that needed it. That is one vendor-reported case, not a typical or guaranteed result.
