To import a part into Alibre, first identify your Alibre product and version, then check that version’s supported formats for the file you received. If the supplier can export the model, request a supported neutral solid format—such as STEP, SAT, IGES, or Parasolid—when available. After opening it, verify a known dimension, units, orientation, and placement; format support alone does not guarantee a correct import.

How do I import a part into Alibre?

  1. Identify your Alibre product and version. Check whether you use Alibre Design or Alibre Atom3D, and note the installed release. Their published format lists differ, and Alibre warns that individual product versions may support only a subset of the formats listed for Alibre Design. See Alibre’s CAD file types and interoperability overview and Atom3D import and export list.
  2. Identify the part file. Note its extension and, if known, the CAD application and version that created it. A native file from another CAD system may depend on a translator that is not available in your Alibre release.
  3. Check support for that exact combination. Use the format list or documentation for your installed product and release. Do not assume that a format listed for Alibre Design is supported by Atom3D, or that every release supports every format on a general list.
  4. Choose the import file and use your release’s open/import workflow. Menu labels and dialog options can vary, so follow the instructions for your installed release rather than relying on a universal click path.
  5. Validate the model. Compare one or more known dimensions with the source, confirm units and orientation, inspect its placement, and check whether expected geometry is missing or unexpectedly fragmented.

Which file format should I ask for?

If you need editable CAD geometry and the sender can choose an export, ask for a neutral solid format that your installed Alibre version supports. Alibre Design’s published neutral-format list includes STEP, SAT, IGES, and Parasolid; the documentation does not establish one format as best for every source application or release. Native CAD formats may also work when the relevant translator is supported.

Format or category When to consider it Important qualification
STEP A practical first request for exchanging solid CAD geometry, if your release supports it. Check support for your exact product and version; validate units and dimensions after import. Alibre’s Version 28.1 notes document a historical STEP units-related display issue.
SAT, IGES, or Parasolid Alternative neutral formats when the sender’s CAD system can export them and your release supports them. No one format is established as universally superior. Availability depends on product, release, and translator support; see Alibre’s format overview.
Native CAD file Consider it when Alibre lists support for the source application’s format and version. Native-format translation can depend on the installed release and translator; check the applicable format documentation.
STL or OBJ mesh Use only when a mesh/reference workflow suits your task and your exact Alibre release supports it. Do not assume it will open as an ordinary editable solid. Alibre’s Design overview lists STL and OBJ among import formats, while its purchase FAQ says Alibre products cannot open or edit STL files. Release history also records changes to mesh import, viewing, and use. Verify the current behavior for your product and version.

Alibre names HOOPS translation technology in its format overview, and its release history records translator changes over time. That is another reason to check the installed release rather than treating a broad product-family list as a guarantee.

Can Alibre open STEP files?

STEP appears in Alibre Design’s published format list, but that does not guarantee support in every Alibre product or release. Confirm the exact version you use before asking for or relying on a STEP export. If supported, compare the imported model with a known dimension and inspect units, placement, and orientation.

Why is my imported part the wrong size or position?

Import problems can involve scale, placement, or units. Alibre’s release history documents historical cases in which some imported Inventor parts were scaled by 1/10 or placed incorrectly, and its Version 28.1 notes describe a STEP units-related display issue. These examples show why validation matters; they do not establish that the same issues remain in current releases.

  • Compare a known model dimension with the imported part.
  • Check the units expected by the source file and the units shown or applied in Alibre.
  • Inspect orientation and position relative to the origin or other parts in the workspace.
  • Look for missing or unexpectedly fragmented geometry.

If a check fails, confirm that the file was exported in the intended units and that the format is supported by your specific release. The cited documentation does not establish a universal recovery procedure for every failed import, so consult the manual or support guidance for that release before changing geometry or rescaling the model.

Can I edit an imported STEP model?

Imported geometry can sometimes be manipulated with direct-edit or surfacing tools, but the available operations depend on the model’s geometry and the tools in your Alibre version. Alibre describes editing imported geometry in its format documentation; its article on surfacing workflows discusses working with imported surfaces and stitching a watertight surface into a solid.

An imported neutral model does not, simply by being opened, recreate the original design’s feature history. If you need to change it, first establish whether the geometry is a solid or a surface and whether the intended edits are supported by your edition and workflow.
