A halfway import failure can leave no changes, some records committed, or a paused job that can resume. The result depends on the importer’s transaction and batch behavior—not just on the error message. Before retrying, check the import log and destination: repeating a partially completed import can duplicate or overwrite data.
What can happen when an import stops midway?
There are three common outcomes, and a failure message alone does not tell you which one occurred:
- Everything is rolled back. Some importers restore the destination to its pre-import state after an unsuccessful run.
- Some changes remain. An importer may commit records in batches or individually, leaving successful work in place even though the overall job failed.
- The job can resume. Some systems save a checkpoint and continue incomplete work from that point.
These are product-specific behaviors, not interchangeable guarantees. For example, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations says an unsuccessful database import automatically rolls back and restores the target sandbox to its pre-import state. By contrast, SAP Commerce says a failed DATA ONLY import leaves data already imported into the target table in place. Salesforce B2C Commerce likewise warns that an interrupted job can leave successfully imported data alongside old data that was not changed or removed.

How can you tell what was imported?
Start with the job’s log or transaction history, then verify the destination. Look for the stage where the process stopped and whether the tool reports successful, failed, or partially failed records. A job-level failure can coexist with successful record-level results.
For example, Power Apps provides an import log with counts for successful, failed, and partially failed records, as well as tabs for reviewing affected records. Dynamics 365 administrators can inspect environment change-history logs. Use the documentation for your specific product to locate the equivalent log and interpret its statuses.

What to check before retrying
- Identify the exact import run. Open its job, operation, or transaction log and note where it stopped.
- Determine what committed. Check record-level results and inspect the destination for records or changes from that run.
- Confirm the rollback guarantee. Verify whether this import mode rolls back the whole operation or can retain successful rows or batches. Do not infer rollback from the word “failed.”
- Check for a saved checkpoint. If the importer supports resuming, confirm that state exists and follow its documented resume procedure.
- Decide whether cleanup or restore is needed. Consult the product’s recovery guidance before deleting or replacing data. Preserve a recoverable copy when the documented process calls for it.
- Retry only after accounting for existing work. Choose a resume, reconcile, cleanup, or full retry procedure based on what the log and destination show.
Can you resume the import instead of starting over?
Only if the importer supports checkpoints and the failed run left a usable saved state. InfluxDB 3 Enterprise’s import plugin documents resuming incomplete tables from checkpoints when import state is available. If no state exists, its documented behavior is to restart from the beginning. Check the saved state and the product’s instructions before relaunching the job; a generic retry may not resume where the previous run stopped.

When might cleanup be necessary?
An incomplete import can leave data in a state that needs product-specific recovery. MySQL NDB advises preparing cleanup after an unsuccessful import, potentially including dropping tables or databases, to avoid an inconsistent state. That is not a general cleanup recipe: dropping objects can cause data loss, so use the procedure for your exact product and import method rather than applying another system’s steps.

Why large imports need extra planning
For SQL Server bulk imports, logging behavior depends in part on the recovery model and table conditions. Because logging affects transaction-log capacity, review the relevant bulk-import guidance and available log space before a large operation. This is a planning consideration, not a universal cause of halfway failures.
Without the platform, import method, and transaction settings, there is no single exact recovery command or outcome. Those details determine whether the right action is rollback, reconciliation, checkpoint resume, or documented cleanup.
