The headline doesn’t name its alternative, so this article assumes it means LibrePhotos, a free, self-hosted photo manager. That is an inference, not a confirmed identity. LibrePhotos’ own feature comparison marks it as having several features that the same table marks absent in Immich, including scene detection, category detection, semantic image search, and syncing metadata to files. The same table, however, credits Immich with a timeline view and an iOS app that LibrePhotos lacks. “More features” therefore holds only for specific capabilities, not as an overall count, and a 2026 comparison from HomeNode still recommends Immich to most people moving off Google Photos.

Which tool the headline most likely means

Three self-hosted photo managers come up most often in 2026 comparisons with Immich: LibrePhotos, PhotoPrism, and Nextcloud Memories. The headline’s phrase “this free self-hosted alternative” fits LibrePhotos best, because it is the candidate whose published feature matrix makes explicit, feature-by-feature claims against Immich. If you meant a different tool, the comparison criteria below still apply, but the specific feature claims will not.

What LibrePhotos’ feature matrix claims

The following entries come from LibrePhotos’ official “Feature Comparison” page. They reflect what the project itself marks as present or absent, and they have not been independently audited.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Feature LibrePhotos (per its own matrix) Immich (per the same matrix)
Scene detection Present Absent
Category detection Present Absent
Semantic image search Present Absent
Syncing metadata to files Present Absent
Timeline view Absent Present
iOS app Absent Present

Three limits apply to this table. First, it is first-party product documentation, so it tells you what the project claims, not how well each feature works. Second, it is undated in the copy this article relies on, and Immich releases quickly, so confirm each row against current release notes before you decide. Third, it conflicts with later third-party coverage: it marks semantic image search absent for Immich, while HomeNode’s June 2026 comparison lists semantic search among Immich’s strengths. A checkmark count does not settle which tool is “better”; it depends on which of these rows matter to you.

Where Immich still has the edge

The 2026 comparison coverage consistently favors Immich for people moving off Google Photos. HomeNode’s comparison, dated June 20, 2026, names these as Immich strengths:

  • Automatic mobile backup, which is the core job most Google Photos switchers need done.
  • Face recognition, semantic search, and multi-user support.
  • The timeline view and iOS app that LibrePhotos’ own matrix marks as missing.

HomeNode also says LibrePhotos is harder to recommend as a primary app because of concerns about mobile backup and development consistency. That is HomeNode’s judgment, not an independent test, and this article has not run either app side by side. Other coverage disagrees. OSSAlt’s March 8, 2026 comparison calls Immich the best fit for most people, while selfhosting.sh, updated February 17, 2026, reaches different assessments of the same three tools. Treat the subjective rankings as opinions and weigh them against your own backup and storage needs.

Setting up Immich

Immich’s official quick-start describes the deployment path below. Setup steps for LibrePhotos were not among the sources reviewed for this article, so check its official documentation before comparing deployment effort.

  1. Download the Docker Compose file and the environment file from Immich’s official quick-start.
  2. Edit the environment file to set the upload directory and the database directory.
  3. Choose a media storage location with enough free space for your library and its growth. The official setup does not give a capacity recommendation.
  4. Do not place the database files on a network share. The quick-start states that network shares are not supported for database files.
  5. From the directory that contains the Compose file, run docker compose up -d to start the containers in the background.

When the containers are running, finish setup in the web interface described in the quick-start.

Hardware and storage

HomeNode recommends at least an N100-class mini PC with 8 GB RAM for a comfortable Immich experience. That is HomeNode’s recommendation, not an official Immich minimum. In the same June 20, 2026 article, HomeNode estimates a used mini PC at roughly $150–200. Prices change, so treat that figure as a dated estimate. Because the official setup depends on free space in the media location rather than a fixed drive size, plan storage around your existing library before choosing a machine.
