Imgur ended access from the United Kingdom on 30 September 2025. UK visitors cannot log in, browse Imgur, or upload images, and Imgur-hosted images embedded on other websites will not display to users in the UK. Imgur says you can still request your account data or ask for account deletion without signing in.
What changed on 30 September 2025
Imgur’s service-status guidance says access from the UK is no longer available from 30 September 2025. The restriction covers:
- Logging in to an Imgur account
- Viewing Imgur content directly
- Uploading new images
- Displaying Imgur-hosted images embedded on third-party websites for UK users
A page containing an Imgur embed may still load normally in the UK, but the image itself can be missing because the request to Imgur is restricted. Imgur’s current guidance is available in its United Kingdom access help article.

Was Imgur blocked by the ICO?
No. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) describes the loss of access as Imgur’s commercial decision, not an access block imposed by the regulator. In its 30 September 2025 statement, the ICO said the decision was made while it was investigating Imgur owner MediaLab over children’s information and age-assurance practices.

The ICO’s statement does not say that it ordered Imgur to withdraw from the UK or technically blocked its servers. Read the regulator’s account in “Statement: Update on Imgur investigation”.
Why did MediaLab withdraw Imgur?
The regulatory record supplies both the company’s stated business rationale and the surrounding privacy investigation. The ICO’s February 2026 penalty notice records that MediaLab told it on 11 August 2025 that “market conditions are such that operations are no longer viable in this region.” MediaLab then gave the ICO a target exit date on or before 30 September 2025 and confirmed the restriction on that date.

The same record says MediaLab committed to address the identified infringements if it restores access in the future. That is not an announcement that access will return; Imgur’s help page continues to state that UK access is unavailable.
What the ICO found about children’s privacy
On 5 February 2026, the ICO announced a £247,590 penalty against MediaLab.AI, Inc., Imgur’s owner. The regulator said the relevant processing took place between September 2021 and September 2025 and identified three failures:

The regulator’s detailed findings and penalty context are in its MediaLab monetary penalty notice.
Can you download your Imgur data or delete your account?

What site owners should do about broken Imgur embeds
Because the restriction applies to embedded content, UK visitors may see empty spaces, broken-image icons, or incomplete articles even when the host website remains online.

Audit affected pages
- Search templates, posts, comments, and databases for
imgur.comandi.imgur.comURLs. - Test pages from a UK connection, including logged-out and mobile views.
- Check CSS and layout behavior so a missing image does not leave a large blank area or hide captions.
Replace or remove embeds
Move images to a host that explicitly supports UK access and the embedding pattern you need, or store them on infrastructure you control. Before switching, verify UK availability, logged-out embedding, retention and deletion controls, account recovery, privacy terms, moderation, and age-assurance arrangements. The official information available for this issue does not establish a particular provider as an equivalent replacement.
Preserve rights and accessibility
Confirm that you have permission to republish each image, retain useful alt text and captions, and update image URLs in feeds, cached pages, documentation, and social previews. Keep a backup of originals rather than relying on a remote embed as the only copy.
Will Imgur access return?
No restoration date has been announced in the official guidance. The ICO notice records MediaLab’s commitment to address infringements if access is restored, but that is a condition in the regulatory record, not a plan or promise to reopen Imgur in the UK. Until Imgur changes its service-status guidance, treat UK access as unavailable.
