Traditional IMAX 15/70 film cameras are loud because they move a wide strip of film through a large camera mechanism at high speed. NASA records that at 24 frames per second, film travels through the camera at 336 feet per minute. That rapid mechanical transport makes quiet, clean dialogue recording difficult on set.
What makes a traditional IMAX film camera loud?
The main reason is the work required to move 15/70 film through the camera quickly enough to expose 24 frames each second. NASA’s 1992 technical record for the 12-IML-1 camera gives the transport rate as 336 feet per minute at 24 frames per second. The 15/70 Filmmaker’s Manual describes the camera as considerably louder than an Arriflex 35mm camera.
That evidence establishes a noisy camera system and fast film movement, but it does not isolate how much sound comes from the motor, shutter, magazine, vacuum, or any other individual component. Nor does it provide a measured decibel level, so a precise loudness figure would be misleading.
Why does the noise matter for dialogue?
Microphones recording actors near the camera can pick up its mechanical noise. Quiet scenes are especially challenging because the camera sound can compete with speech, making usable synchronized dialogue harder to capture. The 15/70 Filmmaker’s Manual discusses limits on sync sound, but does not provide a controlled acoustic comparison or a universal rule that dialogue cannot be recorded with an IMAX camera.
#1 Best Overall
- 📷 Film-saving: You can have twice as many images per roll. For example, a film roll with 36 exposures can yield around 72 half-frame photos - doubled!
- 📷 Lightweight and Easy-to-use: The pocket-size camera is light and tiny, and hence convenient for you to bring along daily. Since its instructions are simple, it is suitable for all analog hobbyists.
- 📷 Built-in Flash: Turning on the flash by adjusting the silver ring around the lens so that you can use KODAK EKTAR H35 during days and nights, outdoor and indoor.
- 📷 Perfect for Beginners: The point-and-shoot camera is easy to use for new analogue hobbyists.
- 📷 Five colors: Off-white, black, brown, sage and sand. Neat and natural.
One production workaround is to choose the camera according to the scene. In a 2023 interview about Oppenheimer, cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema described using a System 65 camera for dialogue and sometimes shooting additional IMAX takes when the director could make the sound work. That approach preserves the option of the IMAX image without requiring every dialogue take to be filmed with the same camera.
What does a camera blimp do?
A blimp is an enclosure around the camera intended to reduce the sound that reaches the set. It can make sound recording more practical, but it adds substantial weight and bulk—important trade-offs when a camera needs to be positioned or moved.

The older 15/70 Filmmaker’s Manual excerpt gives a weight of 275 pounds for a blimped 2D camera. In a July 2026 report on The Odyssey, the Associated Press described a newer enclosed Keighley camera-and-blimp setup weighing about 300 pounds. Those figures describe different systems in different sources; they are not a controlled, directly comparable test of design changes or sound reduction.

How newer IMAX systems change the trade-offs
The Associated Press reported that Christopher Nolan and IMAX developed the newer Keighley camera and blimp system after Oppenheimer and in preparation for The Odyssey, which AP described as the first feature shot entirely on IMAX film. The enclosed setup still comes with practical limits: AP reported that film had to be reloaded every two-and-a-half to three minutes.

- 📷 The included roll of Ultramax film will be either the Kodak Alaris packaging (pictured) or the Eastman Kodak packaging depends on availability.
- 📷 Film-saving: You can have twice as many images per roll. For example, a film roll with 24 exposures can yield around 48 half-frame photos - doubled!
This recent reporting shows that newer equipment can support more ambitious IMAX dialogue filming, not that it makes the camera silent or removes the production constraints. The reported weight and reload interval apply to that particular system, not to every IMAX film camera.

- Film speed: NASA’s 1992 record reports 336 feet per minute at 24 frames per second for the 12-IML-1 camera.
- Sound comparison: The 15/70 Filmmaker’s Manual calls the camera considerably louder than an Arriflex 35mm camera, but supplies no decibel measurement.
- Blimped camera weight: The manual excerpt lists 275 pounds for a blimped 2D camera; its publication date is not established in the available record.
- Newer enclosed system: AP reported about 300 pounds and reloads every two-and-a-half to three minutes for the Keighley camera-and-blimp setup in July 2026.
These figures explain why IMAX filmmaking involves compromises among sound, camera size, placement, and film runtime. They do not establish a precise noise level, a component-by-component cause, or an apples-to-apples acoustic comparison between camera generations.
