Boxer Imane Khelif filed a criminal complaint in Paris in August 2024 over online harassment linked to the Paris Olympics. Her lawyer, Nabil Boudi, told Variety that J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk are named in it. Headlines called it a “lawsuit,” but the reporting describes something narrower: a criminal complaint filed against X or unknown persons, with the two public figures mentioned in its body. Nobody has been reported as charged, and no court has found either of them liable.
Did Khelif sue Rowling and Musk?
Not in the ordinary sense. A civil lawsuit seeks damages from named defendants. What Khelif’s team filed, according to Variety and Euronews (both 14 August 2024), was a criminal complaint alleging aggravated cyber harassment. It was reportedly directed against X or unknown persons. That wording lets prosecutors decide whom to investigate, including people not named in the filing.
Boudi, Khelif’s Paris-based lawyer, told Variety: “J. K. Rowling and Elon Musk are named in the lawsuit, among others.” The word “lawsuit” there is loose usage. The underlying filing is a complaint asking prosecutors to act.
What happened
- Khelif, an Algerian boxer, was the target of online abuse and claims about her gender eligibility during the Paris 2024 Games. Those claims were made about her. This article does not treat them as established fact.
- Her lawyer said the complaint went to the Paris prosecutor’s online-hate unit on Friday, 9 August 2024.
- Boudi confirmed that Rowling and Musk were mentioned, among others. He said the complaint asked prosecutors to investigate the people named and anyone else they considered relevant.
- Variety reported the context. Rowling had posted about Khelif after her bout with Italy’s Angela Carini. Musk had endorsed a post stating “men don’t belong in women’s sports.”
These are the reported circumstances behind the complaint. They are allegations in a filing, not findings by a court or prosecutor. The reporting relies on Boudi’s account, and the complaint itself has not been published.

Named versus charged
| Term | What it means here |
|---|---|
| Criminal complaint | A filing that asks prosecutors to investigate. This is what Khelif filed. |
| Civil lawsuit | A claim for damages against defendants. Not what was reported. |
| Named or mentioned | Appearing in the complaint. It carries no legal finding. |
| Charged or prosecuted | A formal step after investigation. Nothing in the reviewed reporting says it happened to Rowling or Musk. |
Where the case stands
The public sources reviewed do not say whether the complaint led to charges, a hearing, dismissal or any other outcome. Silence is not evidence either way, so it would be wrong to call the matter closed or to call it actively under investigation.

The Paris prosecutor has a different investigation into X. It opened in January 2025 after separate reports and was later widened over concerns including Grok. In 2026 the prosecutor’s office announced a search of X’s French offices and summonses for voluntary interviews of Musk and former chief executive Linda Yaccarino, set for April 2026. The prosecutor’s communication does not describe this as part of Khelif’s complaint. News about it says nothing about her August 2024 filing.
