Choose a carousel when visitors need to move through slides on a page; choose a gallery or lightbox when they need to open images for closer viewing. These are related but distinct jobs, and several libraries specialize in one or support both. The available official documentation supports a useful comparison of six options—not a verified ranking of thirteen—so this guide focuses on what can be substantiated and how to choose.
Carousel or gallery: which behavior do you need?
A carousel presents a sequence of slides within a page, commonly with touch or arrow navigation. A gallery or lightbox opens images in a viewing interface, often with zoom and image-specific controls. Its documented features include zoom, touch gestures, responsive images, and thumbnails, making it worth considering when visitors need a richer viewing interface than a simple slide strip. Licensing depends on use: its license documentation directs commercial sites, projects, themes, and applications to a Commercial license, while GPLv3 is available for compatible open-source projects. Check the terms against your project before release.

If accessibility is central to your choice, review its documentation and test the actual keyboard, focus, and assistive-technology behavior in your implementation.
Slick: a jQuery-era comparison point
Slick is relevant when maintaining an existing jQuery-based interface or evaluating a migration from older slider code. A Swiper-authored comparison describes Slick as jQuery-based and reports version 1.8.1 as its last release in September 2017. Because that is a competitor’s comparison rather than an independently checked release record, treat the release claim as attributed, and verify Slick’s own release history before making a maintenance decision.
