NCIS: New York gives the franchise a New York setting with a personal connection: LL COOL J returns as Sam Hanna, who comes back to his hometown and helps lead a team assigned to high-stakes missions in the city and its port. That combination is what makes this more than a location change on paper—and why the new series has my attention.
What is the new NCIS series?
It’s NCIS: New York, a CBS drama starring LL COOL J as NCIS agent Sam Hanna and Scott Caan as the agent who partners with him. CBS describes the team as taking on high-stakes missions to defend New York City and its port.

Why the Big Apple is more than a backdrop
Sam Hanna has a reason to return
The hook is not simply that the franchise is heading to a different city. Hanna is returning to New York, his hometown. That gives the setting a direct connection to the lead character, while the team’s stated responsibility puts the city and port at the center of its work.

The premise leaves room for the city to matter
CBS frames New York as one of the world’s vital cities and ports, and says the new team will defend it through high-stakes missions. That official premise gives the location a role in the show’s setup, rather than treating it as a label. It does not yet establish which neighborhoods, agencies, or local issues particular episodes will feature.
Who is in the series?
Alongside LL COOL J and Scott Caan, CBS’s cast announcement identifies Jennifer Beals, Jacqueline Byers, Shane Harper, and Devin Druid as series regulars. CBS names Byron Balasco as showrunner and lists him, R. Scott Gemmill, LL COOL J, and Jason Barrett as executive producers. CBS Studios is the production company.
