Samsung has announced the wide book-style foldable this title is asking for: the Galaxy Z Fold8 opens to a 4:3 main display and has a 10:16 cover display. That makes Samsung the clearest answer to “which company?” at the announcement level. Whether the shape suits you depends on what you want to do with the larger screen—and the announcement is not a substitute for hands-on testing.
What makes the Galaxy Z Fold8 a wide foldable?
Samsung’s July 22, 2026 announcement gives the Fold8 a 10:16 cover-display aspect ratio and a 4:3 main-display aspect ratio. The cover ratio is also described as 16:10 when expressed in the opposite orientation in Samsung’s design interview; it is not a different proportion. The main screen’s 4:3 shape is the defining detail for people looking for a wider, more tablet-like canvas when the phone is open.

Samsung positions that larger display for reading, viewing and gaming, while the cover screen handles quick interactions. Those are the company’s intended use cases, not independent findings about comfort, app behavior or performance. Samsung also lists 3,000 nits peak brightness for the main display and a 4,800 mAh battery; these are specifications, not a measure of real-world battery life or screen visibility.

A wide foldable is not automatically the best foldable. Samsung design executive Hubert Lee says users’ priorities differ, including productivity and multitasking on one hand and portability on the other. The useful question is whether you want the open screen’s proportions for your regular tasks enough to accept a larger device when it is folded.
#1 Best Overall
- SPLIT THE VIEW. MULTITASK¹ TO THE MAX: Productivity never felt this powerful. Use up to three apps¹ at once on the expansive inner screen of Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. You’ll enjoy plenty of space to work, play, connect and more.
- MULTITASKING MADE SMARTER WITH AI: Stay one step ahead with AI² that suggests which apps you might need next. Then view those multiple windows side by side on the large screen of your Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.
- ANY SHOT, ALL THE DETAILS: Dive into the details of any image with our best camera on a foldable smartphone. Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra boasts a 200MP camera — and an upgraded 50MP Ultra Wide lens — for both stunning wide shots and extreme close-ups.
- ELITE CHIPSET. FLUID GRAPHICS: Experience what’s possible with our most advanced Galaxy Z Series processor. From immersive gaming and speedy multitasking to the latest Galaxy AI³ features, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 keeps everything running seamlessly.
- THE BATTERY YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR: It’s the battery you’ve been wanting in a foldable cell phone. Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra packs a powerful ultra-sized⁴ battery in an ultra-slim design. Plus, with Super Fast Charging 2.0⁵, charge up faster than ever before.
- Reading and broad layouts: A 4:3 inner display provides a squarer canvas than a tall phone screen, which may suit pages and side-by-side content. The announcement does not establish how specific apps or publications will render.
- Video and gaming: Samsung names viewing and gaming among the Fold8’s intended uses, but the announcement does not provide comparative testing or confirm how particular content will fit the screen.
- One-handed use and portability: Compare the folded proportions and feel in person if possible. The cited announcements do not establish subjective comfort, pocketability or weight comparisons.
- Multitasking: A broad inner canvas may be attractive if you regularly keep multiple tasks visible. The sources establish Samsung’s positioning, not a tested productivity advantage.
Lee’s broader point is that no single foldable can meet every need. That is a sensible way to assess this category: treat screen proportions as a choice, not a universal upgrade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the other announced foldables compare
| Device | What is established | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 | Samsung lists a 10:16 cover display and 4:3 main display. Pre-orders began in select markets on July 22, 2026. | Samsung’s use-case descriptions are positioning; independent comparative testing, current prices and country-by-country stock are not established here. |
| Apple iPhone Duo | Apple announced a 5.4-inch outer display and 7.6-inch inner display on September 9, 2026. Apple said availability would begin October 23, 2026. | The announcement establishes screen sizes, not that its proportions answer the same wide-screen preference as the Fold8. The stated availability date had not yet arrived as of September 9. |
| Huawei Pura X Max | Android Central reported on April 13, 2026 that it was official and available for pre-order in China, describing it as horizontally wide. | The report said global availability was unclear and some specifications were unconfirmed at the time. Check current market access and support before considering it. |
Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold is a separate category: it is an inward-folding multi-fold device, not a conventional book-style phone that opens into a wider screen. Its existence adds another foldable geometry to Samsung’s range, but does not make it a direct substitute for the Fold8’s 4:3 design.

What to verify before choosing one
- Check availability where you live. Samsung said Fold8 pre-orders began in select markets; that does not establish current stock or support in every country. Confirm directly with local retailers or the manufacturer.
- Try the folded and open shapes. If possible, handle the device and test the cover screen one-handed, then open it for the reading, video or multitasking you actually do.
- Check app behavior for your use. The announced aspect ratio alone cannot show whether your preferred apps make effective use of the larger canvas.
- Compare current prices and purchase terms. The cited announcements do not establish current transaction prices, promotions, or availability by retailer.
