Raising my four kids in Spain has changed how I think about control. I’ve become more willing to let them try, make small mistakes and take responsibility for age-appropriate tasks instead of stepping in at the first sign of friction. That is my experience, not proof that Spain makes parents less controlling. What has changed is where I put my attention: less on managing every move, more on teaching, trusting and setting limits that matter.

What changed in my parenting

I used to treat many everyday decisions as things I needed to supervise closely. In Spain, I’ve found myself pausing before I intervene. If a child can attempt a task safely, I am more likely to let them do it—even if it takes longer or is not done exactly the way I would do it.

That shift is not the same as stepping away from parenting. I still want my children to understand what is expected of them, and I still set boundaries. The difference is that I try not to confuse being involved with controlling every detail. I can guide them without doing everything for them.

Less control does not mean no boundaries

The distinction I am learning is between a necessary limit and an unnecessary intervention. A limit protects someone, keeps an important commitment or makes a clear expectation understandable. An unnecessary intervention is often my urge to make a task faster, neater or more convenient by taking it over.

The OECD’s 2022 report Evolving Family Models in Spain describes positive parenting as nurturing and empowering, while also involving recognition, guidance and boundaries. That framing helps me: autonomy is something I support inside a relationship, not a reason to leave children without direction.

What independence can look like in ordinary family life

Independence does not have to mean a dramatic milestone. It can mean letting children take part in responsibilities that fit their age, then giving them room to learn from doing them. A Spanish study of 272 parents of children aged 10–14 found that parents most often connected autonomy with personal self-care and responsibility at home and school. In the study, offering children opportunities to do tasks and teaching right from wrong were the strategies reported to carry the most weight; setting limits and control were less prominent overall.

That is a finding about the surveyed families, not a description of every parent in Spain. The study also found differences by children’s school stage: control was more salient among parents of secondary-school children than among parents of younger children. It reported differences in ideas about autonomy and parenting strategies by parents’ gender and education, and lower expectations for secondary-school children to contribute to household tasks. Those details complicate any simple claim that one country has a single, relaxed parenting style. The study is M-A de la Caba-Collado and R. López-Atxurra’s 2015 article, “Autonomía: las voces de madres y padres”.

How I decide when to step in

When I feel the impulse to take over, I try to ask what the moment actually requires. That pause gives me a way to loosen control without ignoring safety or responsibility.

  • Is there a real safety concern? If so, I intervene. Independence is not a reason to allow a preventable danger.
  • Is this a task they can reasonably attempt? If it is, I try to give them time and the chance to do it themselves.
  • Have I explained the expectation? Clear guidance is fairer than expecting a child to guess what I want.
  • Does this need a boundary, or do I just prefer my own way? I try to reserve firm control for what matters rather than for every difference in pace or method.

It is a practice, not a rule that works perfectly in every moment. Four children bring different ages, temperaments and needs; allowing one more room to manage a task does not mean expecting the same thing from all of them.

Family pressures shape the room parents have to choose

Time, work and care responsibilities are part of the backdrop to parenting, but they do not explain my personal change. A 2026 summary by Spain’s Ministry of Equality of the Estado de las Paternidades en España 2026 report says 40% of mothers surveyed, compared with 26% of fathers, had left work to provide care. In that report, 67% of mothers and 62% of fathers said they lacked enough time for rest, self-care and leisure; 42% of respondents cited difficulty reconciling care and employment, while 89% said caring for children or loved ones was among the things they most enjoyed in life. These are findings from the report’s respondents, not national administrative counts or evidence about my household. The ministry describes fatherhood as becoming more involved and present even as care burdens and inequalities persist. Its summary is available at the Ministry of Equality.

What I want my children to learn

I do not want my children to experience love as constant correction. I want them to know I will step in when they need protection or guidance, and that I also believe they can learn to handle more for themselves. For me, becoming less controlling in Spain has meant making more room for that learning—not giving up on responsibility, care or limits.
