Yes—you can role-play a villain in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, but “villain era” is a player’s framing, not an official game mode. The game lets your powerful Rogue Trader shape events across the Koronus Expanse, while its conviction system tracks ideological choices. For a Chaos-oriented run, the Heretical conviction is the closest fit; it is not a universal evil meter, and a single cruel decision does not automatically define the whole playthrough.
Can you play as a villain in Rogue Trader?
You can make choices that are cruel, self-serving, or aligned with Chaos and treat them as part of a villainous role-play. The premise gives your character considerable power and influence over the people and events of the Koronus Expanse. In Owlcat Community Manager Olga Novikova’s December 7, 2023 launch article for Xbox Wire, the Rogue Trader is described as a figure with “a monolith of resources and power” who can extend the Imperium’s influence across the Expanse. That authority gives the role-play room to feel consequential rather than merely cosmetic.

Still, “villain” is not a discrete mode or a simple good-versus-evil setting. The game tracks convictions—ideological directions reflected in choices—and ruthless conduct does not necessarily mean every option is Heretical. You can shape a character’s outlook without assuming that every harsh decision advances the same path.
What does the Heretical conviction represent?
Heretical is the conviction most directly associated with Chaos, but it is not presented as allegiance to one particular Chaos god. Owlcat Games characterizes it as “more Chaos Undivided rather than Tzeench” (the spelling is reproduced as it appears on Owlcat’s page). That distinction matters if you want your character to embrace Chaos broadly rather than role-play devotion to a single god.
#1 Best Overall
- The new Rulebook focuses on the Gilead System, allowing you to tell your own stories in a society beset by daemonic invasion and internal corruption
- Character Creation has been streamlined, with a focus on Frameworks. With so many choices of who and what you can play, you’ll want to decide the focus of your game early
- The Factions Chapter is a primer on life in the 41st Millennium, detailing each of the organisations vying for supremacy in the Warp-torn Gilead System
- English Version | 2+ Players | Ages 14+ | 60 to 90 Minute Playing Time
Conviction choices can award different amounts of progress, so the path is shaped across multiple decisions rather than by one universal evil score. A detailed GameFAQs choice guide documents Heretical-associated options, including keeping the Blade Shard and choosing to leave Rykad Minoris to become a daemon world. The guide also lists choices involving tormenting or killing characters and steering Nomos toward Heresy. These are plot-sensitive examples, not a complete or official rulebook; use spoiler caution if you are still discovering the story.
How should you approach a villain-role-play run?
- Choose a motive, not just a label. Decide whether your Rogue Trader is pursuing power, embracing Chaos, or treating others as expendable. That gives individual choices a coherent role-play logic.
- Watch the conviction outcomes. When a decision offers a conviction-linked direction, consider whether it fits the character you are building. The GameFAQs guide records different point awards and paths, so do not assume that every brutal response advances Heretical.
- Keep your own spoiler boundary. Choices involving the Blade Shard, Rykad Minoris, and Nomos can disclose major story outcomes. If you want to role-play without knowing consequences, avoid detailed choice guides until you are comfortable with spoilers.
Do your choices change the ending?
They can contribute to the ending, but no single choice should be treated as a guaranteed ending trigger. The Rogue Trader community wiki describes endings as involving hidden in-game flags, called “Etudes,” as well as quest completion, dialogue and action choices, and conviction rank. Its overview says conviction-linked Nomos endings require completing related quests, guiding Nomos through dialogue and actions, and reaching a high rank in a conviction. This is useful orientation, not an exhaustive verified trigger list.
For a Heretical character, think of the ending as the result of a longer pattern of decisions and completed content. A particular response may contribute to that pattern, but the available ending summary does not establish that it guarantees a specific outcome on its own.

What should players know about patches?
Ending behavior can be affected by updates. Owlcat’s official Steam announcements page includes a July 2026 entry for Hotfix 1.6.1.514, which says it fixed cases where Heretical epilogues abruptly ended after certain choices. If an epilogue behaves unexpectedly, check the game’s current patch notes; that specific fix is tied to the listed hotfix, not a guarantee about every current installation or future version.
Where to learn more
Owlcat’s official game page and purchase page provide game information and storefront links. For the developer’s explanation of the Heretical conviction, see Owlcat’s interview. The Xbox Wire launch article provides context for the Rogue Trader’s role and authority. For choice-level detail, consult the GameFAQs choice guide with spoiler caution, and treat the community wiki’s ending overview as a guide rather than official trigger documentation. Official updates are listed on Owlcat’s Steam announcements page.
