Illinois is included in the distribution areas for the frozen berry products added to a recall on October 2, 2026. Check the brand, product name, package size, UPC, lot code and date mark on any Great Value or Trader Joe’s berries in your freezer; only the specific lots listed below are affected, and select stores—not every store—in Illinois received them.
Is Illinois included in the frozen berry recall?
Yes. The October 2 expansion lists Illinois among the states where select Walmart stores received the affected Great Value products and select Trader Joe’s stores received the affected mixed berry product. That distribution listing does not mean every store carried the products.
Product distribution and confirmed outbreak cases are different things. The FDA’s final outbreak summary lists illnesses in Florida and Georgia, not Illinois. The outbreak investigation was marked complete on September 21, 2026; the supplier’s later recall expansion added product lots as a precaution following traceback information. FDA’s October 2 recall notice and its final outbreak summary cover the two timelines.

A date in 2028 does not rule out a match: the recall includes lots with those date marks. Check the printed lot code alongside the exact product name, size and UPC. The affected Great Value lots were shipped to select Walmart stores in 30 states and Puerto Rico; the Trader Joe’s lot went to select stores in 26 states and Washington, D.C. Both distribution lists include Illinois. See the FDA notice for the complete product and distribution details.
What should I do with a matching package?
- Do not eat it. The instruction applies to a package matching the recalled product and lot identifiers.
- Discard it or return it. FDA says matching Great Value products may be returned to Walmart and the Trader Joe’s product to Trader Joe’s for a full refund.
- Do not try to make it safe by rinsing, freezing or cooking it. The recall instruction is not to consume the affected product.
How is the outbreak related to this recall?
CDC’s final investigation conclusion is that “Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data showed that frozen organic blueberries supplied by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. were contaminated with E. coli O145 and made people sick.” The FDA describes the pathogen as E. coli O145:H28, also called E. coli O145. Its October 2 notice says the newly added lots were recalled as a precaution after traceback information linked them to frozen blueberries involved in the initial July 3, 2026 recall. Read the CDC investigation summary.

The FDA’s final tally was 17 illnesses, six hospitalizations and zero deaths. The final case locations were Florida and Georgia, and the last reported illness onset was August 6, 2026. Those figures describe the outbreak investigation; they do not mean Illinois had a confirmed case in the FDA’s final summary.
CDC also reported that 11 of 13 interviewed people (85%) said they ate frozen blueberries, compared with 24% of respondents in the FoodNet Population Survey who reported eating frozen berries. That comparison contributed to the epidemiologic evidence; 85% is not the share of all outbreak cases and does not, on its own, establish the source. The agencies’ conclusion relied on epidemiologic, laboratory and traceback evidence together. FDA says all samples it collected tested negative, while a product sample collected and tested by Publix earlier in the investigation tested positive for the outbreak strain. Details appear in the FDA summary and CDC update.

What about the earlier GreenWise blueberry recall?
The October expansion is not the same as the earlier GreenWise recalls. FDA and CDC describe an earlier recall of GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries, 10 oz, lot 60401, best by February 9, 2028. Publix later recalled all lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries, including multiple sizes. CDC lists those GreenWise products’ distribution in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia—not Illinois. Do not treat a GreenWise product as one of the newly added Illinois-distributed Great Value or Trader Joe’s lots, or vice versa. See the CDC summary of the earlier actions.

CDC says Shiga toxin-producing E. coli illness commonly causes severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that is often bloody, and vomiting. Symptoms usually begin three to four days after swallowing the bacteria; most people recover without treatment after five to seven days. Some people develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious kidney problem that may require hospitalization.
