Some IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 players have reported that OpenGL options—particularly Perfect landscape and hardware shaders—stopped working after installing AMD Adrenalin 22.11.2, while they had worked with 22.5.1. AMD staff later said a fix was ready for a future driver, but did not identify the release. The reports do not establish that every Radeon system, or every driver newer than 22.5.1, has the problem.

What the reported problem is—and what it is not

The original AMD Community report describes the game’s OpenGL Perfect landscape and HardwareShaders settings failing after an update to 22.11.2. The author said the same setup had worked with 22.5.1. That is a user’s before-and-after account, not a controlled comparison proving that the driver alone caused the change.

The example system was a Radeon RX 6900 XT, Ryzen 9 5900X, 32 GB of RAM, and BAT 4.2.2 with a hotfix. It should not be treated as a test of all Radeon cards, game builds, Windows versions, or mod configurations. Other users have described related OpenGL or anti-aliasing symptoms, but those reports do not establish that they share the same cause.

What AMD confirmed—and what remains unknown

In the AMD Community thread, a staff account, peruka93, posted on February 26, 2024: “Fix is ready. Expect to be included in one of the future driver releases.” The post does not name a driver version. Later replies in the thread reported inconsistent results, so the statement is not evidence that a particular release fixed the issue for every configuration.

AMD’s Adrenalin 22.5.1 release notes identify the Windows driver version as 21.50.21.11 and list supported Radeon families and Windows versions; they do not mention IL-2 1946 or describe a special fix for it. The 22.5.2 notes identify driver version 22.10.17.01, but their selected DirectX 11 performance claims do not establish anything about this game’s OpenGL behavior.

Choose a troubleshooting path based on the symptom

Before changing drivers or files, pin down exactly what fails. A setting that no longer takes effect is different from a game that will not launch, an anti-aliasing problem, or a performance drop. The appropriate next step also depends on the GPU, Windows version, game build, mods, and the driver actually installed.

  • First, record the setup. Note the Radeon model, installed Adrenalin version, Windows version/build, game version, mods, and the precise symptom. If you can identify which OpenGL provider the game is using, record that too.
  • Back up the game configuration. Keep a copy before changing settings or files so you can restore the original state.
  • Change one thing at a time. Retest the same in-game setting after each change. This makes it easier to tell whether a driver change or configuration change affected the symptom.
Option When it may make sense Trade-off and caution
Keep the current driver and verify the game configuration The symptom is limited to Perfect landscape or hardware shaders, and you want to avoid changing support for other games or devices. It may not restore the affected OpenGL behavior. Confirm the exact setting and setup before moving on.
Roll back to a previously working driver You need a straightforward comparison and have a record that an older driver worked on this same system. An older driver can affect support or behavior in newer games and hardware. Use AMD’s official install and uninstall guidance linked from its release-note pages; do not assume that 22.5.1 will solve every system’s issue.
Try a community-reported OpenGL library redirection You want to retain a newer driver and are comfortable with a more technical, version-sensitive workaround. Users have discussed using an OpenGL library from 22.5.2 with newer drivers, but this is community guidance, not an AMD-supported recipe. Do not download DLLs from unknown mirrors or assume a registry edit is supported by AMD.

Driver rollback and OEM considerations

If you choose to test an older driver, use official AMD installation or removal instructions rather than mixing files from multiple packages. Make a note of the current version first, and keep a copy of the game configuration. Test the game after the driver change before altering other settings.

AMD advises laptop and all-in-one users to use the computer manufacturer’s driver when a package from AMD.com causes compatibility problems. This matters because an OEM may provide a driver tailored to that device. Do not assume a desktop Radeon package is the right choice for every laptop or all-in-one system.
