Ikigai’s idea is simple: replace the familiar app grid with a text-based home screen, then add speed bumps and limits around the apps most likely to pull you into a long scroll. That can make a phone feel less inviting, but the title’s “cured my phone addiction” claim is one reviewer’s subjective framing—not evidence that Ikigai cures addiction or will reduce everyone’s screen time.
What Ikigai changes about your Android home screen
IKIGAI: Minimal Launcher, by etarin, is an Android launcher that replaces a conventional grid of app icons with text-based layouts. Google Play lists three layouts—VOID, BREATH, and STUDIO—along with visual themes. The aim is to make the home screen less visually stimulating and to make opening apps a more deliberate choice.
A launcher changes the interface you use to reach apps; it does not remove the apps themselves or change the underlying habits that drive you to open them. Ikigai’s additional controls are therefore central to its appeal.

- BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.
- Digital Guard: A control aimed at short-form video feeds.
- Launch delay: A configurable 5–15 second pause before selected apps open.
- App limits and blocking: Options to set daily limits or block apps.
- Hiding and vault: Options to hide apps and use a PIN-protected vault.
- Focus Mode: A focus setting that includes a Pomodoro timer.
These tools may help if your main problem is opening particular apps reflexively. A delay gives you a moment to reconsider; a limit or block can make repeated access harder. They are less likely to address the reasons you reach for your phone in the first place, and a determined user may simply override restrictions or switch to another distraction.
Will it cure phone addiction?
There is no evidence in the available sources that Ikigai produces a clinical effect, cures addiction, or causes a measured reduction in screen time. Google Play includes the developer’s promotional claim that the app can reduce daily phone use by “2+ hours,” but the listing provides no study or measurement method to support that figure. It should be treated as marketing, not an established outcome.

The Yahoo Tech review’s indexed excerpt describes a favorable experience with Ikigai’s minimalist approach, but also says it is less responsive than Pixel Launcher and that draw-to-search takes time to learn. The full Yahoo article was not accessible, so that excerpt offers only a limited view of the reviewer’s experience. It does not establish that Ikigai will work the same way for other people.

Finding apps and getting around
A text-based layout can reduce the visual pull of a crowded grid, but it may also change how quickly you locate frequently used apps. The Yahoo Tech excerpt specifically flags responsiveness and the learning curve for draw-to-search as usability considerations. If you rely on quick access to essential apps, consider whether a slower or less familiar interaction would frustrate you enough to abandon the launcher.

Accessibility and privacy disclosures
Google Play says the optional AccessibilityService is used for Digital Guard and navigation gestures, and that processing happens locally on the phone. The store’s Data safety section also displays “No data collected” and “No data shared with third parties.” These are developer-provided disclosures shown on the listing, not an independent technical audit; Google Play notes that safety information is supplied by developers and may vary.
Recent update
Google Play lists Ikigai as updated on September 26, 2026. The release notes mention an upgrade to target Android 16 (API 36), smoother crossfade transitions, and improvements to search performance and stability. Those notes describe the developer’s update; they do not independently establish how responsive the launcher feels on a particular device.

How to decide whether to try it
- It may suit you if a conventional icon grid and instant access make it too easy to open short-video or other distracting apps, and you are willing to adapt to a different home-screen interaction.
- It may not suit you if you prioritize the quickest possible app access, dislike launcher changes, or need restrictions that you cannot easily bypass.
- Set a practical test by choosing the apps you want to interrupt, setting a delay or limit for them, and checking your own screen-time records over a consistent period. That can tell you whether the setup changes your behavior; it cannot establish a clinical cure.
