Verdict: IKEA’s GÅTEBO is a useful way to combine microwave, grill, and air-fry functions in one countertop appliance, but it is not a like-for-like replacement for a dedicated air fryer if speed and crispness are your priorities. In Tom’s Guide’s comparison, its fries took longer and came out less crisp than those cooked in the dedicated fryer tested.
What is the IKEA GÅTEBO?
GÅTEBO is a freestanding combination microwave with microwave, air-fry, grill, and microwave-plus-convection cooking modes. IKEA UK lists it as “Microwave oven, air fry function IKEA 500/black,” article number 006.035.19. The US listing uses article number 706.035.06, so check the product page for your market rather than assuming identifiers or specifications are interchangeable: IKEA UK product page and IKEA US product page.
It is best understood as a multifunction microwave rather than an air fryer with microwave capability. That distinction matters if you are choosing between replacing an existing microwave and buying a machine mainly for air-frying.

What does it offer for the counter space?
For UK model 006.035.19, IKEA lists 26 L capacity and maximum microwave output of 900 W. Its product page gives external dimensions of 49.5 × 43.6 × 29.2 cm and a weight of 16.10 kg. The official manual states a more precise oven capacity of 26.67 L, a 288 mm turntable, 1000 W grill, and 2100 W convection; IKEA rounds the capacity to 26 L on its consumer listing. The listed accessories include an air-fry grid, a microwave grill grid, and the rotating glass turntable. IKEA also specifies ten microwave power levels, defrosting by time or weight, two cooking stages, and a child lock. Those are product specifications, not proof that each cooking mode performs as well as a dedicated appliance.
How well does it air-fry?
Tom’s Guide compared GÅTEBO with a Dreo ChefMaker dedicated air fryer in a hands-on test. The reviewer reported that fries took 21 minutes in GÅTEBO—nearly twice as long as in the tested fryer—and were less crisp and browned. For the chicken skewers in that comparison, GÅTEBO took twice as long to cook through, although the reviewer found the chicken juicy. The practical trade-off is straightforward: GÅTEBO can air-fry without requiring a separate appliance, but the cited comparison found slower cooking and weaker crisping than its dedicated-fryer test. If air-frying is the main reason you are shopping, that performance gap is more important than the convenience of combining functions.
How does it handle microwave and grill jobs?
In an earlier, explicitly preliminary first-impressions article, Tom’s Guide reported four minutes to reheat pasta and three minutes 30 seconds for soup in the reviewer’s examples. The reviewer’s grilled cheese took six minutes; it was toasted but drier than the stovetop version. The author described the controls as intuitive and the manual as useful, while making clear that the first review was provisional. These are anecdotal examples, not standardized benchmarks. In the later comparison, the reviewer said cleanup was easy after juice from chicken skewers dripped onto the glass plate. That is a limited observation from one cooking session, rather than a claim about cleanup after every recipe.
What do independent review pages establish?
Which? lists the UK model as a freestanding combi turntable microwave and records its first review in February 2026. Its page describes lab categories such as heating speed, evenness, and food quality, but gates the score and detailed findings. Its actual result therefore cannot be stated from the visible information: Which? GÅTEBO page.

Its visible expert summary calls overall quality moderate and below the category average, but does not expose the detailed test findings. When accessed in 2026, IKEA’s UK listing showed a price of £149, a five-year guarantee, and a customer rating of 2.7/5 from 11 reviews. The US listing showed $199 and 5/5 from three reviews. These are market-specific listing snapshots, not a shared international price or a robust basis for comparing product performance. The manual states that specified components—including thermostats, temperature sensors, printed circuit boards, and light sources—are to be available to professional repairers for at least seven years after the last unit of the model is placed on the market. It states at least seven years of availability for handles, hinges, trays, and baskets to professional repairers and end users, and at least ten years for door gaskets. This is the manual’s availability period, not a guarantee that every part is immediately in stock in every country. The manual gives the terms.
