IKEA and Xbox’s nine-piece YXSTABY collection brings gaming furniture into shared living spaces with a mix of mobile storage, seating and display pieces. Its muted white, black and beige palette, punctuated by green accents, is intended to sit alongside ordinary home furnishings rather than make a room feel like a dedicated gaming setup. The collection does not hide every sign of gaming: some pieces store gear, while others put controllers and collectibles on view.
What YXSTABY is—and what makes its design different
YXSTABY is a nine-piece furniture collection developed by IKEA and Xbox. IKEA describes it as a response to gaming happening across rooms and screens, alongside everyday activities such as dinner and homework. That is the companies’ design rationale, not an independently verified finding about how well the furniture performs.
According to IKEA, one designer from IKEA and one from Xbox worked on every piece. The collection pairs straight lines with softer forms, using muted white, black and beige with green details on pockets, slings and compartments. The restrained palette is only part of the approach: the furniture is meant to accommodate gaming equipment without making every item a conspicuous display of it.

IKEA’s launch announcement says gaming is part of everyday life for more than 3 billion people. That figure is IKEA’s published estimate; the announcement does not provide its underlying study or methodology.

How the pieces fit different jobs around the home
The collection is not one all-in-one gaming station. Its pieces address different needs—moving a TV, keeping accessories close, displaying collectibles or providing a place to sit. The choice is less about finding a single “best” item and more about deciding which gaming gear should be stored, moved or shown.
| Piece | Role and design detail | What to check locally |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming TV stand on castors | Mobile TV furniture; IKEA US lists a white version. Castors make this the clearest example of a piece intended to move around the home. | Dimensions, supported screen size and weight, price and stock on the local IKEA listing. |
| Gaming controller display box | A black display piece. IKEA US describes it as pre-assembled; IKEA’s announcement says the mirrored box displays a controller from every side and can also show figurines or collectibles. | Current local availability, dimensions and price. |
| Gaming lounge chair | IKEA UK lists a Vissle beige version. Its name and appearance do not establish comfort, ergonomic support or how long it is suitable to sit in. | Local assortment, dimensions, price and product details. |
| Thumbstick stool | Inspired by an Xbox controller thumbstick, with a grip-like surface and a top that tilts as the user moves, according to IKEA’s designer. | Local availability and product specifications. The design description is not a safety or ergonomic certification. |
| Gaming side table on castors | A mobile-storage option that extends the collection’s idea of keeping gear close while allowing furniture to move. | Local product listing, SKU, dimensions, price and stock. |
These differences matter in a shared room. A stand or side table on castors can be moved when the space needs to serve another purpose. Storage compartments, pockets and slings keep accessories nearby without requiring them to stay in view. The mirrored controller box does the opposite: it turns gaming objects into part of the room’s display.

Why the thumbstick stool is more than a visual reference
IKEA says the stool was developed using 3D design files for an Xbox controller, with input from Xbox device designers. IKEA designer David Wahl described the challenge as shaping the seat and stability while retaining the thumbstick-like form. He also said the stool tilts with the seated person, echoing how a thumbstick moves.
That account explains the design idea, but it does not establish tested stability, safety or ergonomic performance. Treat it as a distinctive seating concept rather than evidence that the stool suits every user or long gaming sessions.

How to choose pieces for a living room
- Start with what needs a place. List the TV, controllers, headsets and collectibles you actually want to accommodate. Choose storage for items you prefer to put away and display for pieces you want visible.
- Decide whether furniture needs to move. A TV stand or side table on castors is relevant if you expect to rearrange the room. Check the local listing for dimensions and load or screen compatibility before buying; those specifications cannot be assumed from the product name.
- Check the room’s visual balance. The collection’s muted colors are designed to be less visually assertive, while green accents identify storage details and the mirrored box makes displayed objects noticeable. Consider which effect suits the room.
- Verify the local item, not just the collection name. IKEA lists selected pieces in different markets, but assortment and availability vary. Confirm the exact product, specifications, price and current stock with your local IKEA catalog or store.
Launch and availability by market
IKEA’s announcement, published 26 August 2026, said YXSTABY would launch in IKEA stores and online from 1 October 2026, with availability varying by market. Official IKEA pages identify selected products in the US and UK, and IKEA Taiwan has a market-specific collection page. Those listings show that pieces appear in more than one market; they do not establish that all nine items are available in every country, store or at the same time.
Check the live listing for your country before making plans around a particular item. The announcement’s launch date is not a guarantee of current stock, and local prices, dimensions and product specifications should come from that market’s product page.
