In the final, fifth round of JoSAA 2026, IITs made 18,861 seat allotments against listed capacity of 18,826—a difference of 35. India Today reports that 16 of the 23 IITs had institute-level allotments above their listed totals, citing the JEE Advanced 2026 Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report. These are allotments, not confirmed enrollments.
What the 2026 figures show
The comparison is between listed seat capacity and allotments in JoSAA’s final round. India Today’s account of the JIC report gives these combined figures:
- Listed IIT capacity: 18,826 seats.
- Final-round allotments: 18,861 seats.
- Difference: 35 more allotments than listed capacity.
- Institutes above their listed totals: 16 of 23 IITs.
The official JEE Advanced report index lists a 2026 report and identifies IIT Roorkee as the organising institute. These are raw seat counts, not a ranking of demand or institute quality; the IITs have different listed capacities. The figures are reported by India Today as drawn from the JIC report.
Why allotments can exceed listed capacity
The capacity and allotment totals include seat categories that do not map simply to a one-seat-per-listed-place comparison. India Today reports that the stated capacity included 3,776 female-only supernumerary seats. It also reports that final-round allotments included five supernumerary seats for DS candidates, 15 for foreign nationals, and 16 minimum-cut-off seats. Separately, 37 female candidates received seats through the gender-neutral pool in addition to female-only allocations.

Those categories are relevant context, but the figures alone do not establish that they fully account for the 35-seat overall difference or every institute’s overage. The precise accounting method should be checked against the original JIC report.

What an allotment does—and does not—mean
A JoSAA allotment is an offer or assignment made during the seat-allocation process. The reported total of 18,861 does not say how many candidates accepted their offers, reported to an IIT, or ultimately enrolled. It should not be described as the number of students admitted or enrolled.
JoSAA 2026 handled allocation for the 2026–27 academic year across 138 participating institutes, including 23 IITs. Its site published a Round 5 allocation result notice.
