Yes—Choujin X is a strong next read if what you enjoy about Tokyo Ghoul is Sui Ishida’s supernatural horror and stories of people changed by extraordinary transformations. The two manga share a creator, but they have different protagonists and premises. Choujin X is not established as a sequel, prequel, or shared-universe continuation.

Why Tokyo Ghoul readers may enjoy Choujin X

The clearest connection is Sui Ishida. VIZ markets Choujin X as a work from the creator of Tokyo Ghoul, and its description promises dark humor and quirky horror. Both series put transformation at the heart of their stories, giving readers a reason to try Ishida’s newer work without assuming it repeats the earlier manga’s setup. VIZ’s Choujin X page and Tokyo Ghoul page categorize both as horror and thriller; Tokyo Ghoul is also categorized as supernatural. Those are publisher labels, not a definitive critical taxonomy.

How the premises differ

What to compare Tokyo Ghoul Choujin X
Starting point College student Ken Kaneki becomes a half-human, half-Ghoul hybrid after a violent encounter. Best friends Tokio and Azuma are attacked by a superhuman mutant called a choujin; Tokio becomes one himself.
Central situation in the publisher description Kaneki has to navigate Ghoul society and its turf wars in a world where ghouls live among ordinary people and crave human flesh. The description centers on Tokio and Azuma’s friendship and Tokio’s transformation.
Tone signaled by VIZ Horror, supernatural, and thriller categories. Dark humor and quirky horror; horror and thriller categories.

The shared appeal is supernatural change and horror, not an interchangeable plot. If Kaneki’s hybrid identity and the hidden society of ghouls are what you want more of, Choujin X has a distinct premise rather than a continuation of those events. If you are open to a different transformation story with a friendship at its starting point, it is an appealing choice.

Is Choujin X related to Tokyo Ghoul?

The official descriptions identify both as manga by Ishida but do not establish that they share a universe or that one continues the other. Treat Choujin X as a separate series, not as a required next chapter in Kaneki’s story.

Is Choujin X finished?

No. VIZ’s official chapter listing, checked October 3, 2026, marks Choujin X as ongoing and lists chapters 77.1, dated September 15, 2026, and 77.2, dated September 29, 2026. VIZ says the latest free chapters available to a reader’s location are offered through partner MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA, so access can vary by territory. Check VIZ’s chapter listing for current status and access.

By contrast, VIZ’s Tokyo Ghoul page presents the original series’ final volume and complete box sets, making it the more straightforward option if you prefer a finished collection. This comparison is about the original Tokyo Ghoul, not a claim about every related release.

Where to start reading

  1. For Ishida’s newer series: Start with Choujin X, Vol. 1, listed by VIZ as the series debut. The page provides a purchase route; check the retailer for the current format, availability, and price.
  2. For the reference point: Start Tokyo Ghoul at Vol. 1. VIZ also lists complete box sets for readers who want the original series in a collected format.
  3. For digital chapters: Use the official chapter listing and follow its MANGA Plus option where it is available in your territory. The catalog and regional access may change.

Ishida’s comments on his craft offer a small window into why readers may value the work beyond its premise. In a Shueisha interview about Tokyo Ghoul, he said, “I try to leave the reader with the impression that they’ve seen some real development, even in chapters with heavy exposition.” That is his description of his approach to those chapters, not a guarantee that the two series read alike.
