Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden says Sony’s reported plan to stop making PlayStation discs starting in 2028 could damage the brand by making players question whether they own a game or merely have access to it. He accepts that downloads are more convenient, but argues that disc buyers and collectors remain important. His “significant brand hit” is a personal assessment—not a measured result—and he says he does not know Sony’s financial reasoning.
What did Shawn Layden say about PlayStation discs?
Layden made the comments after being asked about Sony’s all-digital future on The Expansion Pass podcast, according to VGC. He was formerly PlayStation’s US boss and left Sony in 2019, when he was chairman of its worldwide studios group.
Layden acknowledged the appeal of downloads, joking that they are easier than crossing the living room to insert a disc. But he said physical purchases serve players who collect and display games, including people who buy multiple copies, keep one sealed and play the other. To him, that collecting is part of gaming culture, not just an alternative way to install a game.

His concern is that digital purchases can feel more like access than ownership: “If you can’t sell a thing, that means you don’t own a thing. And if you don’t own it, then what are you buying? If you’re buying access, that doesn’t quite sound as sexy, to be honest.”

What is the reported 2028 disc plan—and what is not confirmed?
VGC reports that Sony is to stop making discs starting in 2028. The report is not, by itself, a primary Sony announcement: the available information does not establish the plan’s precise scope, exceptions or timing. It also does not mean physical games are already unavailable, or establish that every current PlayStation console will be affected.
Layden has previously discussed the possibility as a business calculation involving disc sales, manufacturing costs, broadband availability and revenue. In an account of an earlier interview, TechRadar quotes him describing a historical threshold based on whether broadband could support downloads for most customers worldwide. That is Layden’s reflection on the decision—not Sony’s disclosed rationale.

Why does Layden think dropping discs could hurt the brand?
Layden’s argument is about the relationship between a platform and its customers, not only the mechanics of buying a game. A disc can be collected, displayed and potentially resold. A digital purchase may be convenient, but the buyer’s ability to transfer it can be limited by its license terms. If players feel they are paying for continuing access rather than a copy they can control, Layden believes that could affect how they view PlayStation.

He called the possible reputational cost “a significant brand hit,” while expressly noting that he has “no visibility on the financials” behind Sony’s decision. The phrase is his judgment, not evidence of a quantified loss or a measured change in customer opinion.

Does buying a PlayStation game mean you own it?
“Ownership” can refer to different things. A person may own a physical disc as an object without owning the game’s copyright or receiving unrestricted rights to the software. MIT Press’s The End of Ownership reproduces PlayStation license language stating that software is licensed, not sold, and that users receive rights to use it without acquiring ownership of the software. The book also discusses limits on transferring licensed digital content.
That example helps explain Layden’s distinction between owning an item and having permission to use software, but it does not establish identical terms for every game, transaction or territory. Nor does it settle every legal question about physical discs or digital purchases. A buyer should check the terms that apply to the particular game and region rather than assume that a disc grants unrestricted software rights—or that every digital purchase has exactly the same restrictions.

What does the 80/20 figure mean?
VGC quotes Layden speculating that “maybe 80% of the people download and 20% don’t, or whatever that breakdown is going to be.” He presents the split as a rough hypothetical and says the remaining group matters; it is not a verified statistic about PlayStation sales.
