When one Anker earbud is noticeably quieter than the other, the cause is usually a setting, a fit or blockage problem, or a limit somewhere in the playback chain. You can check each of these in order without opening the case or the earbud. A persistent fault is worth suspecting only after those checks fail. Anker’s earbuds are sold under the Soundcore brand, and the steps below follow Soundcore’s official support articles, checked in October 2026.
Start by working out the pattern
The pattern of the problem tells you where to look first. Note which of these matches your situation before you change anything.
| What you notice | What it most likely points to | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Both earbuds are quiet on one device or one app only | A volume setting in that device or app | Step 1, starting with that device and app |
| Both earbuds are quiet on every device and app | A system-wide volume limit or a low level on the earbuds themselves | Step 1, including the iPhone or Android volume-limit settings |
| One side is quieter on every device and every piece of content | Left/right balance, a seating or fit problem, or a blocked speaker outlet | Steps 2 to 4 |
| One side is quieter only after reconnecting, or only on one device | A balance setting stored on that device | Step 2, checking the balance on the device you use |
| The imbalance persists after every step below | Possible device fault that the checks cannot resolve | Step 5 and the support section |
Step 1: Rule out volume limits and playback settings
Start with the connected phone or computer and the app you are playing from. A quiet earbud is often just a low output level, so raise the volume in both places before anything else.
Recommended Free Tools
On the phone or computer
- iPhone: Check Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety. If Reduce Loud Sounds is on, its limit applies to both earbuds equally, so it can make everything quiet but cannot make only one side quiet.
- Android: Check the media volume slider and any maximum volume limit in the sound settings. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Windows and Mac: Confirm that the earbuds are the selected output device and that the output volume is not low. On a Mac, the output volume is under System Settings > Sound > Output.
In the media app
Many streaming apps and video players have their own volume slider, separate from the system volume. Raise it and play the same track again.

Test with a second device or a second app
Connect the earbuds to a second device, or play a different app, and listen for the same imbalance. If the difference follows the earbuds, continue with the checks below. If it only happens on one device or in one app, the problem lies in that device’s or app’s settings.
Step 2: Check the left/right balance
A balance setting shifted toward one side is one of the most common causes of a quiet earbud. Soundcore’s official guidance names it alongside fit, and it is easy to miss because it is not on the main volume screen. Set it back to centre on each device you use.
iPhone
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual and adjust the L/R Balance slider until it is centred.

Android
Look for a Balance slider under Settings > Accessibility, or in the audio section of your phone’s sound settings. Its location depends on the manufacturer.

Soundcore app
Open the Soundcore app, select your earbuds, and look for a balance control on the device settings screen. Not every model has one, so if you do not see it, that is normal and the device-level balance is the one to check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStep 3: Check the fit and clear any blockage
Fit affects how much sound reaches your ear. An earbud that sits slightly out of place can sound much quieter than its partner, even when both are working correctly.
- Put the earbud in your ear at its normal angle, pressing gently so the tip seals against your ear canal.
- Check that the ear tip is not folded, covering, or partly blocking the sound outlet.
- Try the ear tip size that fits your ear best. A tip that is too small or too large is a common reason for weak bass and reduced volume on one side.
- Play the same track again and compare the two earbuds.
Step 4: Clean the mesh and vents gently
Dirt, earwax, or dust in the speaker mesh can muffle one earbud. Soundcore’s model-specific articles recommend gentle cleaning of the mesh with a cotton swab, a soft cloth, or a small clean brush. Work carefully and avoid pushing debris deeper into the earbud.

- Remove the ear tip first if your model’s care instructions allow it.
- Use a dry, soft brush or a cotton swab to lift debris from the mesh and vents.
- Do not soak the earbud or spray liquid into it. One Soundcore article mentions a small amount of rubbing alcohol, but that is not a universal instruction, so use it only if your model’s care guide says it is safe.
- Let the earbud dry fully before you put the tip back on.
A small soft cleaning brush is an optional accessory for this step. Settings, fit, and charging checks cost nothing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 5: Charge, restart, and use only the correct reset
Place both earbuds in the case, close the lid, and charge them fully. Then restart the earbuds and try again. A low battery in one earbud can sometimes reduce output, so charging each one fully is worth the time.
If the imbalance remains, a reset may help, but the method depends on the model. Soundcore publishes separate reset procedures for different models, including case-button sequences and touch-control sequences, and these are not interchangeable. Find your model number on the product label, the charging case, or the box, then follow the reset steps in the official article for that model. Pair the earbuds again only if that article tells you to.

When to contact Soundcore support
If the imbalance persists after the volume, balance, fit, cleaning, charging, and correct reset steps, contact Soundcore support. Before you do, note the following so the support team can work quickly:
- The exact model number and which earbud is quieter
- The phone or computer, its operating system version, and the Soundcore app version
- Whether the difference appears on a second device or in a second app
- The steps you have already tried
Soundcore’s model-specific guidance for its P42i states that a quieter earbud is usually a fit or settings issue rather than a hardware fault. That is a statement about that model’s troubleshooting, not a diagnosis of your earbuds. Soundcore’s support articles do not say that a persistent imbalance proves a hardware failure, and they do not promise a repair or replacement. Whether a device is covered by warranty is decided by support after they assess it.
Soundcore’s official pages referenced here are its support articles on Liberty Buds 2 volume levels, one earbud that is not charging or connecting properly, the P42i, and the P31i/R60i NC. Menu paths and reset procedures change with software and firmware updates, so if a label on your screen differs from the one described above, follow the nearest equivalent and check the current article for your model.
