IDrive is a strong choice when you need to back up several computers and mobile devices under one account, with file versioning and recovery options included. Its value depends on the storage tier you need and what the plan costs after its first-year promotion. It also offers file sync, but its backup and recovery features—not collaboration—are the main reasons to consider it.
What IDrive does—and what it is best for
IDrive combines online backup with Cloud Drive, a file-sync feature. The distinction matters: backup is intended to protect files and devices so you can restore them, while sync keeps selected files consistent across linked devices. IDrive lists support for PCs, Macs, Linux, iPhones, iPads, Android devices, and external hard drives. It also advertises whole-machine backup, snapshots, file versioning, and IDrive Express, a physical transfer service. Availability varies by product and platform. IDrive’s feature list describes backing up multiple device types into one account.
That breadth makes IDrive a good fit for households or small teams protecting several devices, especially if they want more than a simple folder-sync service. It is less compelling if shared editing and collaboration are the primary goal: TechRadar’s review describes collaboration as limited and says the interface could use polish.

IDrive’s official pricing page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists a 10 GB Basic tier; Mini tiers with 100 GB or 500 GB; Personal options from 5 TB through 100 TB; Team plans that vary by computer/user count and storage; and Business tiers with larger shared storage and business infrastructure support. The displayed options are not interchangeable: check the relevant plan for its storage cap, device or user allowance, and included features.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
At that date, the page displayed the 5 TB Personal annual plan at $6.99 per month, against a displayed regular amount of $9.99 per month. IDrive says the discounted price applies to the first year and standard pricing applies from the second year onward. These are a dated pricing snapshot, not a guaranteed quote; verify the checkout total and renewal price before subscribing. Check IDrive’s current plan and pricing page.
To judge value, compare the total due now and at renewal with the storage you will actually use, the number and type of devices you need to protect, and any required add-ons. A low promotional monthly figure is not the full cost of keeping a plan. Cloudwards’ September 8, 2026 review describes IDrive as allowing backup from unlimited devices, but with a storage limit; confirm the applicable terms on the plan you select.

Backup and recovery: versions, deleted files, and large transfers
IDrive says it keeps up to 30 previous versions of backed-up files and offers snapshots for point-in-time recovery. These features serve different purposes: version history helps retrieve an earlier version of a file, while snapshots provide a point-in-time view of backed-up data. IDrive also describes incremental, compressed backups that transfer modified portions of files, plus a 30-day Trash recovery period for deleted items. Confirm current allowances and retention terms for your subscription on the vendor’s feature page.
For large initial backups or recoveries, IDrive advertises IDrive Express, a physical transfer service intended to move data without relying on your internet connection for the transfer. Shipping terms, charges, and availability can vary; check them before relying on the service. IDrive’s feature page describes its current backup and recovery features.

Independent reviews provide useful context, but their observations are not guarantees of what every account will experience. TechRadar reports that its reviewer uploaded, deleted, and restored a test folder; the files appeared in Trash, but the reviewer did not find a one-step restore for the whole folder. In a separate test, the reviewer selected an earlier version of a Word document. Cloudwards describes scheduled and manual backups, selectable files and folders, restore to a chosen location, disk-image backup, and Express transfer.
Encryption and the private-key trade-off
IDrive states that it uses 256-bit AES encryption and offers a user-defined private key. According to Cloudwards, choosing the private-key option is part of initial account setup; it cannot be enabled later for an account already created. Cloudwards also says that using the private key prevents file and folder sharing. Do not assume private-key encryption is enabled by default.

A private key can limit provider access to your data, but it also makes your recovery depend on keeping that key safe: if you lose it, you may be unable to recover your files. Choose this option only after weighing that recovery risk against the convenience of sharing. Cloudwards’ review discusses the setup and sharing limitations.

What reviewers found about speed and usability
Upload results vary with the connection, file set, and test method. TechRadar reports that a 1 GB initial upload took about two hours in its test; the same review separately describes a 589 MB folder upload completing in 16 seconds. Those contrasting results are not a dependable speed estimate for your connection.

Cloudwards reports testing a 5 GB transfer through a remote virtual server capped at 100 Mbps, with uploads and downloads approaching that connection limit; it also noted some stutter when downloading larger files. Treat both reviews as observations under their stated conditions, not as a promise of performance. For a large backup, plan for an initial upload and consider whether a physical transfer option is appropriate.
Who should choose IDrive?
- Consider it if you need online backup for several kinds of devices under one account, file versioning, or whole-machine protection.
- Check the plan carefully if your data set is large or growing: storage is capped, and the first-year discount does not establish the renewal cost.
- Look elsewhere for your main need if live collaboration and shared editing matter more than backup and recovery.
- Decide on encryption during setup if you want the private-key option, and make a durable, secure record of the key.
Before comparing IDrive with another service, line up storage and renewal cost, supported device types, recovery and version-history features, encryption choices, and the practical options for a large initial backup or restore.
