I wouldn’t treat it as the automatic better buy: the Claw’s premium price can outweigh its performance appeal, while the Steam Deck may be the better value and easier fit for a Steam-focused library. Which MSI Claw and Steam Deck are being compared?
This recommendation is about MSI’s Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM, specifically the CG3EM-024US configuration listed by MSI’s US store. It is distinct from the Claw 8 AI+ A2VM, which has a separate MSI product page and published specifications. Do not assume that A2VM specifications or reviews apply to the EX model. You want a high-performance Windows handheld
Reviews describe the Claw 8 EX AI+ as a strong performance option, but that judgment is not the result of a current, controlled head-to-head test against Steam Deck OLED. Your results will depend on the games, settings, and power mode you use. Your library needs Windows or several storefronts
The Claw 8 AI+ runs Windows 11, while the Steam Deck runs SteamOS. That difference can matter if the games or services you use work better on Windows or are not part of your Steam library. Compatibility varies by title, so check the games you actually intend to play rather than assuming that either device supports every PC game equally well. PC Gamer praises the Claw 8 EX AI+’s performance and Endurance Mode, but flags its near-$2,000 launch cost as a serious obstacle and does not recommend it as an affordable second device. When the Steam Deck makes more sense
- You prioritize value. If the Claw remains substantially more expensive at checkout, its performance advantage may not justify the premium for your needs.
- Your games already work well on SteamOS. A Steam-focused interface may be a better fit if you mainly play titles in your Steam library and do not need Windows-specific access.
- You want to base the choice on your own games. Check compatibility for each important title, especially if you rely on a particular launcher, multiplayer service, or anti-cheat system.
Battery claims are not a head-to-head runtime test
Battery capacity and advertised or reviewed runtime are different measures. MSI lists an 80 Wh battery for the Claw 8 AI+ A2VM and advertises “4Hrs+ Gameplay Lifetime” specifically in Endurance Mode. How to judge the Prime Day price
- Confirm the exact model. Check that the listing is for the Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM and verify the regional configuration, rather than relying on a page for the Claw 8 AI+ A2VM.
- Compare the price you can actually pay. Check the live retailer page for your country, including stock and the final checkout price. The MSI US listing establishes a product listing, not an Amazon listing or a Prime Day offer.
- Compare against the Steam Deck configuration you would buy. Decide whether the Claw’s Windows access and performance matter enough for the price difference versus your preferred LCD or OLED Deck.
- Check return and support terms. Confirm the seller, warranty, and return window for the exact unit before placing an order.

I’d buy the Claw 8 EX AI+ over a Steam Deck if I specifically wanted a high-performance Windows handheld, needed its broader Windows game and storefront access, and found its live price compelling. If the discount is small—or my games already suit SteamOS—I’d choose the Steam Deck instead. The model and the checkout price, not the Prime Day label, decide the better buy.
