Choose iCloud+ if your household mainly uses iPhones, iPads and Macs and you want automatic device backup, Apple Photos and Drive integration, HomeKit Secure Video or Apple’s privacy features. Choose Google One if your storage is centered on Google Photos, Drive and Gmail, you regularly use Windows or Android alongside an iPhone, or an eligible Google plan’s AI benefits matter to you.
They are not interchangeable on an iPhone: Google One can synchronize selected photos, videos, contacts and calendars, but it cannot create a complete iPhone backup. iCloud Backup can preserve messages, app data and device settings for a full-device recovery. At the 2 TB level, the current U.S. list prices are the same, so the deciding factor is what each subscription actually does for your devices and accounts.

The table shows why a simple “which cloud is better?” verdict is misleading. iCloud+ is primarily an Apple continuity service with storage attached, while Google One is a shared Google account quota with optional bundles. Match the subscription to the job you need it to perform.
What each service actually stores
Google One is one quota for three major Google services
A Google account starts with 15 GB at no charge. That allowance, and any paid increase, is pooled across Google Photos, Google Drive and Gmail. A large photo library, Drive files and years of email therefore compete for the same capacity rather than receiving separate limits.

This design is convenient when your digital life already lives in Google’s apps: one plan can relieve a full Gmail mailbox and a growing Photos library at the same time. It also means a sudden increase in one service reduces the room available to the others. Check the account’s storage breakdown before choosing a tier, especially if video uploads or large Drive archives are involved.
iCloud+ supports Apple services, but not Google’s app model
iCloud storage is used by Apple services including iCloud Backup, iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive. The practical experience is different from Google’s pooled app model because Apple’s storage is tightly connected to Apple devices and their operating-system features. An iPhone backup can consume substantial capacity even when your visible files are modest.
Do not assume that an iCloud+ subscription automatically expands storage inside every third-party app, or that it gives Google Photos, Gmail or Google Drive additional room. Those services continue to use the Google account quota.

Google’s broader plan catalog can also show 400 GB, 2 TB, 5 TB, 20 TB and 30 TB options in particular groupings. Treat those as a changing catalog rather than a universal worldwide lineup. A higher-priced Google tier may be worthwhile for its bundled tools, but it is poor value if you only need storage and will not use those benefits.

iPhone backup: the most important difference
What iCloud Backup can restore
When the goal is to replace or reset an iPhone and return it to a familiar state, iCloud is the practical choice. Apple’s backup system covers supported device settings, app data and messages in addition to other device information. After signing in during setup, you can restore the backup instead of rebuilding the phone manually.
That does not mean every item is copied in exactly the same way: data already synchronized through a service may be downloaded separately, and app providers can impose their own rules. The key distinction is that iCloud is designed as a whole-device recovery path.
What Google One can and cannot do on an iPhone
Google’s iPhone support covers selected data. The Google One app can sync photos and videos to Google Photos, and it can synchronize contacts and calendars to Google services. It cannot back up the entire iPhone, including the complete set of messages, app data and device settings that Apple identifies as iCloud Backup content.
Therefore, Google One is useful as a cross-platform photo or file layer on an iPhone, but it is not a like-for-like replacement for iCloud Backup. If you subscribe to Google One while relying on an iPhone, keep an Apple backup method for device recovery and use Google for the categories you specifically want available outside Apple’s ecosystem.
Which ecosystem fits your household?
Choose iCloud+ for an Apple-first setup
- You carry an iPhone and want the least manual work when replacing it.
- Your photos are managed in Apple Photos and your documents in iCloud Drive.
- You use several Apple devices and want their settings and data services connected through one Apple Account.
- You have compatible HomeKit cameras and need cloud recording; the camera allowance depends on the iCloud+ tier.
- You want Apple-specific privacy tools such as Private Relay or Hide My Email.
Choose Google One for a Google-centered or mixed-device setup
- Your primary photo library is Google Photos and your files are in Google Drive.
- Gmail storage is a significant part of your capacity requirement.
- You routinely move between iPhone, Android, Windows or other non-Apple devices.
- You want one quota that follows your Google Account rather than being tied to Apple hardware.
- An eligible Google AI bundle provides benefits you will actually use.
Many households use both ecosystems. For example, an iPhone owner can keep iCloud Backup for recovery while sending selected photos to Google Photos for access on non-Apple devices. That arrangement increases the chance of duplicate media and two separate bills, so define which service is the authoritative library before turning on every sync option.

Family sharing and personal privacy
How the shared quota works
Both services allow an eligible plan owner to share storage with up to five additional family members. Each person signs in with their own account; sharing a subscription does not require handing over Apple Account or Google Account credentials.
On Google One, members use their personal storage first and then draw from the family’s shared pool. Google says family members cannot browse one another’s files merely because they share a plan; a file must be shared directly. Apple’s family storage works as a shared capacity resource as well, while each person’s Apple content remains associated with that person’s account.
Check the exceptions before enrolling everyone
Not every Google One variant includes family sharing. Google specifically notes that some Lite plans exclude it, and other benefits differ by plan. Confirm that the exact tier you are buying supports the household arrangement you want.
Family sharing also changes capacity planning. A single member with a large video archive can consume most of the common pool, leaving little headroom for everyone else. Review usage by account and set expectations before selecting a tier.
Privacy and encryption controls
iCloud+ features included with the subscription
Apple lists Private Relay, Hide My Email, a custom email domain and Apple Invites as iCloud+ features across the listed U.S. tiers. Private Relay is intended to reduce exposure of browsing details, while Hide My Email creates disposable forwarding addresses for sign-ups. A custom domain is useful for people who want an address at their own domain while using Apple’s mail service.

HomeKit Secure Video is also tier-dependent and requires compatible cameras plus a supported home hub. The allowance rises from one camera on the 50 GB tier to up to five on 200 GB, then unlimited cameras on 2 TB and larger tiers. Availability can vary by country or region.
Advanced Data Protection is optional, not automatic
Do not describe every iCloud+ account as end-to-end encrypted. Apple’s separate Advanced Data Protection setting expands end-to-end encryption from 14 iCloud data categories to 23, including iCloud Backup, Photos and Notes.
Apple also documents important boundaries: iCloud Mail, Contacts and Calendar remain outside end-to-end encryption, and some collaboration arrangements—including certain “anyone with a link” sharing scenarios—do not receive the same protection. Advanced Data Protection is therefore a security choice with trade-offs and exclusions, not a blanket label for all iCloud+ data.
This comparison does not establish that one provider is universally more secure than the other. Evaluate the security controls you need, enable available protections deliberately and read the current provider documentation for account-recovery consequences before changing settings.

Start with the service that is already filling up
- Check whether your current pressure comes from iPhone backups, Apple Photos or iCloud Drive, or from Google Photos, Drive or Gmail.
- Measure the largest categories rather than choosing by headline capacity alone. A family with multiple device backups has a different requirement from a household storing mostly documents.
- Add headroom for growth. Camera video, shared folders and mailbox attachments can increase usage faster than expected.
- If several people will share, total their current usage and identify any account that could dominate the pool.
Use the price break that matches your actual needs
Apple offers a broad range from 50 GB through 12 TB, while Google’s listed entry paid tier is 100 GB and its larger current bundles include 2 TB and 5 TB. The equal U.S. price at 2 TB does not make the plans equivalent: Apple’s package emphasizes device continuity and privacy features, whereas Google’s larger tiers may include AI benefits that are valuable only to some subscribers.

For a small Apple household needing backup space, the lower iCloud+ tiers can be enough. For a Gmail-heavy family whose Google Photos library is growing, Google’s shared pool may be simpler. If your requirement is several terabytes, compare the exact local offers because the available capacities and bundle names can differ from the U.S. pages.
Practical setup and switching checklist
Before subscribing
- List every device and account that must be covered.
- Decide whether full iPhone recovery is a requirement or whether selected photo, contact and calendar sync is sufficient.
- Check current usage in both Apple and Google services; an unused free allowance may cover part of the need.
- Confirm local currency, taxes, renewal price and whether family sharing is included in the exact plan.
- For HomeKit Secure Video, verify camera compatibility and the presence of a supported home hub.
When adding a second provider
- Keep the existing backup until the new photo or file copy has completed and been spot-checked.
- Choose one primary library to avoid silently creating duplicates or divergent edits.
- Verify that contacts and calendars are not being edited by two services in conflicting ways.
- Check that family members understand which quota is shared and which account owns each file.
- Only cancel the old plan after you have confirmed recovery or download of the data you intend to retain.
If storage is suddenly full
For Google, inspect the combined Photos, Drive and Gmail breakdown; deleting a large category can free space for all three services. For iCloud, examine backups, Photos and Drive separately and remove obsolete device backups or files only after confirming you no longer need them. If a family pool is full, identify the account responsible before buying a larger tier.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating Google One as an iPhone backup: selected-data synchronization does not restore a complete device.
- Comparing only gigabytes: the two services attach different operating-system features and bundles to the same capacity.
- Assuming family members can see private files: Google says sharing a plan does not expose files unless they are shared directly.
- Assuming every Google plan supports families: some Lite variants do not.
- Calling all iCloud+ data end-to-end encrypted: Advanced Data Protection must be enabled and still excludes categories such as Mail, Contacts and Calendar.
- Assuming HomeKit recording is unlimited on every tier: camera limits increase with iCloud+ capacity and require compatible hardware.
- Using a U.S. price as a global promise: regional pricing, taxes, availability and plan packaging change.
- Buying an AI bundle solely for storage: higher Google tiers may include benefits you do not need.
Decision guide: which should you choose?
Pick iCloud+
Pick iCloud+ when your priority is an Apple experience that is automatic at the device level. It is the stronger fit for iPhone backup and restore, Apple Photos and Drive integration, HomeKit Secure Video or the listed Apple privacy features. Select the capacity by adding current backups, photos and files, then leave room for growth and family members.
Pick Google One
Pick Google One when your working set is Google Photos, Drive and Gmail, especially if several people use different operating systems. Its pooled quota is straightforward for Google services, and eligible tiers can add AI benefits. On an iPhone, use it as a selected-data and cross-platform service, not as the phone’s sole backup.
Use both deliberately
Using both can make sense when you need Apple’s complete device recovery and Google’s broad access to photos or files. Keep the roles explicit, monitor duplicate storage and account for two subscriptions. That arrangement is a choice about resilience and platform reach, not evidence that either provider replaces the other.
Bottom line
There is no universal winner. iCloud+ is the better default for an Apple-heavy household that wants full iPhone backup, Apple service integration, HomeKit recording or Apple’s optional privacy controls. Google One is the better fit for Google Photos, Drive and Gmail users who need a cross-platform quota or value an eligible AI bundle. If you use an iPhone, remember the decisive limitation: Google One synchronizes selected data but cannot back up the entire device.
