Ice Caves are an officially named cave biome in Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3; “Snowy Caves” is not identified as a separate official cave-biome name in the official sources reviewed. The snapshot says Ice Caves can generate beneath colder Overworld biomes, with packed ice, calcite, icicles, occasional snow patches, and ice crystals. That is snapshot information—not confirmation that the feature is in a stable release or available in Bedrock.
Ice Caves vs. Snowy Caves: the key differences

Where to find Ice Caves in Minecraft
Mojang’s Java snapshot changelog says: “The Ice Cave is a new cave biome that can generate under the colder biomes in the Overworld.” Use that as a search clue: explore cave openings or cave systems beneath colder Overworld regions. Because the notes say “can generate,” finding a cold surface biome does not guarantee an Ice Cave below it.
The changelog does not provide a Y-level, seed, exact surface-biome list, or sure-fire locating method. Mojang’s older 1.18 material notes that cave biomes may sometimes generate directly below surface biomes, but this general description does not guarantee where Ice Caves will appear. What you’ll see and encounter inside an Ice Cave
Blocks and visual clues
- Packed ice and calcite: These make up most of the biome.
- Icicles: Icicles hang from ceilings, and larger packed-ice icicles can form on the floor and ceiling. In the snapshot notes, downward-pointing icicles can naturally grow up to five blocks long.
- Snow patches and ice crystals: Snow can occasionally appear on the ground, while ice crystals sometimes generate there. Ice Crystals emit light and can be placed in any direction; they break if their support block is removed.
- Ores and lighting: Ores occur in pockets of stone and deepslate, and glow lichen does not generate in the biome. The snapshot notes also say nearby light sources can break pointed blocks, so lighting may affect icicles.
Mobs and freezing
Alongside the mobs that normally spawn in caves, Strays and Frostbites can spawn in Ice Caves. Frostbite melee attacks apply the Freezing effect, and ranged attacks throw Ice Balls. The snapshot changelog says leather armor protects against freezing as it does with Powder Snow, but does not prevent the effect from being applied or remove it.

Are Snowy Caves a real Minecraft biome?
In the official material reviewed, “Snowy Caves” is not established as a separate cave-biome name. Mojang’s 1.18 announcement discusses lush and dripstone caves as cave biomes and groves and snowy slopes as surface biomes; Minecraft Help also lists established cave-biome names such as dripstone caves. Those sources provide context, not a guarantee about every edition, snapshot, add-on, or future update. Minecraft Help’s biome overview.
If you saw “snowy caves” in a video, map, mod, add-on, or a different edition or version, the phrase may refer to custom content or a visual description rather than a vanilla biome with that official name.

Which Minecraft versions have Ice Caves?
The documented feature is in Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3, published October 6, 2026. The official sources cited here do not establish that Ice Caves have reached a stable Java release or are available in Bedrock. Snapshot features can change, so check the current Java and Bedrock changelogs for release status before relying on the feature in a non-snapshot world.
