India’s first group-stage match at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 is against Australia in Cape Town on 7 October; India play Pakistan in Johannesburg on 10 October. Those are not the tournament’s opening fixtures: play begins on 2 October with a three-team Super Series in Windhoek. The tournament is scheduled to run through 21 November across Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The ICC’s fixture announcement is the primary schedule source; fixtures may change.
What does “India open vs Australia” mean?
It means India open their group campaign against Australia on 7 October in Cape Town. The tournament itself starts five days earlier, on 2 October, with Qualifier-stage teams QF1, QF2 and QF3 playing a round robin in Windhoek. The winner takes the final group-stage place. The fixture list does not identify those teams by national name yet.
The ICC announced the schedule on 1 October 2026. All dates below are in 2027. India’s next listed group fixture is against Pakistan on 10 October in Johannesburg.
How the tournament is structured
The 14-team tournament starts with a three-match Super Series, followed by a group stage, a Super 7 phase and knockouts. In the group stage, 12 teams are divided into two groups of six; each team plays the other five in its group once. The top three from each group and the better of the two fourth-place teams advance to the Super 7. Group-stage points do not carry over. Each Super 7 team plays six further matches. Super 7 fixtures and India’s path
The Super 7 runs from 25 October to 14 November. The ICC’s schedule assigns provisional seeded positions: A1 India, A2 Australia, A3 Pakistan, AB4 England, B1 New Zealand, B2 South Africa and B3 Sri Lanka. These labels do not guarantee those teams will qualify. If another team qualifies while a seeded team does not, the replacement takes the displaced team’s slot. Treat every named Super 7 matchup below as conditional on qualification. No group-stage points carry forward.

The ICC’s schedule release says the three knockouts are day matches beginning at 10:00 local time and have reserve days if required. Check the current ICC schedule for any changes before making plans.
Host venues and tickets
The 12 listed venues are spread across three countries: eight in South Africa, three in Zimbabwe and one in Namibia. The ICC uses Tshwane (formerly Pretoria), Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) and KuGompo City (formerly East London) in its venue naming.

- Use the group fixtures for confirmed group-stage opponents; Qualifier A and Qualifier B remain unnamed slots.
- Read Super 7 opponents as seeded positions, not guaranteed national-team fixtures until qualification determines the occupants.
