There is no single test method that reliably evaluates every TTL, CMOS, op amp, timer, and other IC. Digital logic testers apply input patterns and check logic outputs; analog testers apply circuit conditions and measure behavior. “Universal” testers may cover both, but their actual support depends on the device library, package, voltage, and test routine. Choose by the exact part and property you need to verify—and treat a PASS as a functional screen, not proof of full datasheet compliance.

What an IC tester actually does

An IC tester connects to a device through a socket, adapter, clip, or fixture. It applies power and test signals, observes the response, then compares that response with a stored definition or expected range. A digital tester typically compares logic states; an analog tester must create suitable bias, inputs, and loads and measure analog outputs.

Some instruments also search their libraries for a device that matches the observed behavior. That can narrow down an unknown chip, but the result is only a candidate: different parts can share similar functions, and the tester can identify only devices in its library.

Digital testers for TTL and CMOS logic

Dedicated logic testers are useful for sorting loose 74xx and 4000-series chips, checking gates, buffers, counters, multiplexers, and other supported logic devices. The tester needs the correct pin map and device definition before it can apply valid power and stimuli.

Vizatek VZ4 Portable Digital IC Tester for TTL Series 7400, 74LS00 and CMOS Series CD4000, CD4500
  • This unit will readily test TTL, CMOS series ICs
  • Can identify unknown part numbers
  • Display: 16 characters in 1 line LCD
  • Supports the following: TTL Series: 7400 CMOS Series: CD4000, CD4500
  • Test Pins: 14 to 24 pins
  1. Pin mapping: The tester associates the selected part with its package pins, including power, ground, inputs, and outputs.
  2. Power: It applies the voltage and operating conditions supported by that tester and test definition.
  3. Input patterns: It drives combinations of input states or a clocked sequence.
  4. Output comparison: It reads output states and compares them with the expected truth table or sequence.
  5. Result: Depending on the model, it reports pass/fail, identifies a failing vector or pin, or searches its library for a matching device.

The B&K 575A manual describes single, loop, pass-loop, fail-loop, search, and diagnostic modes; the older manual gives logic thresholds of at least 2.2 V for high and no more than 0.8 V for low. These are instrument-specific details, not universal thresholds for every tester or logic family. B&K 575A manual

The Retro Chip Tester Pro manual lists many 74xx and 40xx variants and shows expected-versus-observed logic discrepancies. Its logic testing uses a 5-V environment and has an approximate 2–3 mA current limitation, which can prevent reliable testing of some higher-consumption devices, including certain counters. Retro Chip Tester Pro manual

Xeltek documents TTL/CMOS Logic Test, Auto Find, and custom test vectors for its SuperPro 6100-series programmers. This is useful if you already need a supported-device programmer, but it does not make the programmer a general analog IC tester. Xeltek logic-test feature

TTL and CMOS names do not guarantee electrical compatibility

“TTL” commonly refers to bipolar 74xx families; “CMOS” includes the 4000 series and 74HC, HCT, AC, and related families. Suffixes such as LS, HC, HCT, and AC indicate variants with potentially different thresholds, supply requirements, speed, and drive behavior. A tester may use one functional logic definition for several variants, so a successful truth-table test does not necessarily check each variant’s electrical specifications.

  • A 74HC part is not automatically interchangeable with a 74LS part. Check the datasheets for supply range, input thresholds, drive capability, and timing.
  • A menu entry such as “7400” may mean a functional test definition, not validation of every manufacturer, suffix, or electrical variant.
  • Some testers operate only at 5 V; that does not establish correct operation at 3.3 V or another intended supply.
  • CMOS devices can be damaged by static discharge, reversed insertion, or incorrect power application. Follow the device and tester handling instructions.

Analog testers for op amps and other linear ICs

Op amps, comparators, 555 timers, regulators, analog switches, ADCs, and DACs need analog test conditions. A digital truth-table routine cannot establish whether an op amp meets its offset, bandwidth, noise, or output-drive specifications.

Functional screening

A basic analog routine may configure an op amp as a voltage follower, amplifier, comparator, oscillator, or threshold detector. It applies known inputs and checks whether the output changes in the expected direction or reaches an approximate range. This can identify a dead device, but it is not necessarily a precision measurement.

Parametric characterization

A more complete op-amp evaluation can measure input offset voltage, input bias current, open-loop gain, common-mode range, output swing and current, slew rate, gain-bandwidth product, noise, supply current, CMRR, PSRR, or stability with capacitive loads. Many bench-top IC testers are functional screeners rather than precision characterization systems; confirm the manual’s actual test list before relying on one for matching or specification checks.

B&K Precision lists op amps, comparators, regulators, references, analog switches and multiplexers, opto-isolators/couplers, and audio ICs among the categories supported by its 570A analog IC tester. The category list does not by itself establish how deeply each part is characterized. B&K Precision 570A

Testing a questionable op amp with a datasheet fixture

  1. Confirm the exact marking, package, and pinout; find the manufacturer’s datasheet for that device.
  2. Build the recommended test circuit, or a simple voltage-follower circuit if appropriate for the part.
  3. Use the specified supply voltage, bypass capacitors, and input conditions. Do not assume every op amp accepts the same supply range or input common-mode voltage.
  4. Apply a known input and measure the output, supply current, and any abnormal heating.
  5. Test each amplifier section in a dual or quad package; one working channel does not prove the others are good.
  6. Compare measured behavior with the datasheet limits and the requirements of the intended circuit.

For a precision device, a simple functional result cannot substitute for checking the relevant limits. For example, the manufacturer’s OP1177 product information is a starting point for its specifications and documentation, not a universal op-amp test recipe.

Choosing among tester types

Type Typical purpose and coverage Package and identification Analog capability Best fit
Dedicated digital IC tester Supported TTL and CMOS logic; exact families and parts vary by library. Often centered on DIP sockets; some models offer search or auto-identification within their libraries. Generally not intended for broad analog testing. Vintage logic hobbyists and repairers sorting supported loose chips.
Analog or linear IC tester Selected op amps, comparators, timers, regulators, switches, and other linear parts. Check supported part numbers, pinouts, and adapters; analog auto-identification should not be assumed. Runs device-specific analog routines; depth varies and may be functional rather than parametric. Users focused on listed analog devices.
Universal tester May combine digital and analog libraries with memory, peripheral, discrete-component, or LCR functions. Coverage, pin limits, and adapters differ; “universal” is not a guarantee of broad practical support. May include selected analog routines; inspect the manual for each target part. Labs and repair benches with a mixed inventory and verified library needs.
Programmer with logic-test feature Programming plus logic tests for supported devices; for example, Xeltek documents logic testing on specified SuperPro 6100-series models. Device and adapter support are model-dependent; computer software is part of the setup. Not automatically a general-purpose op-amp tester. Owners who need a programmer and also test supported logic chips.
DIY or computer-connected fixture Custom microcontroller, FPGA, or datasheet-based tests for chosen parts. Usually requires a purpose-built socket or breakout and careful pin mapping. Can be tailored to analog needs, but requires suitable circuitry and measurement equipment. Builders comfortable designing, checking, and maintaining their own test setup.

Examples illustrate how much “universal” varies. Tesca’s 68032 listing describes separate digital and analog functions, a 20-pin ZIF socket, 6-, 8-, 14-, 16-, and 20-pin DIP support, LCR measurement, and an RS-232 interface for library expansion; it specifies 230 VAC, 50 Hz ±10%, which matters for buyers whose mains supply differs. Tesca 68032 listing Other Tesca listings describe universal testers and a linear tester, but the advertised category names still need to be checked against the actual part support and test procedure: 68029 listing, 68051 listing, and linear tester listing.

How to test a loose DIP IC safely

  1. Identify the part. Read the marking and locate the exact datasheet and pinout. Do not choose a merely similar library entry.
  2. Check physical and electrical fit. Confirm package, pin count, tester support, family, and voltage conditions. Use an adapter for a package the tester cannot accept directly.
  3. Orient it correctly. Match pin 1 and the package outline to the socket diagram. Never force a chip into a ZIF socket.
  4. Follow the tester manual. Insert or remove the IC with power off if the manual requires it; use the model’s own test sequence, since menu labels and procedures are not universal.
  5. Run a single test first. Record the result and any failing pin or vector before using loop or search modes.
  6. Check a suspicious failure. Inspect and clean leads as appropriate, reseat the chip, verify the selected part, and test a known-good device with the same pinout if available.
  7. Escalate when needed. Use loop testing for a suspected intermittent fault only if the tester supports it; otherwise build a datasheet-based fixture or test in the target circuit with bench instruments.

Use ESD precautions for CMOS parts and avoid applying power until the pinout and orientation are verified. A tester’s reverse-insertion protection should not be assumed unless its documentation says so.

What PASS, FAIL, and an unknown match mean

Result What it supports What it does not establish
PASS The device produced the expected response under that tester’s programmed conditions. Full datasheet compliance, correct operation at another voltage or load, or suitability for every circuit.
FAIL The observed result did not match the selected test definition. Definite proof that the silicon is bad; selection, contact, pinout, current, or surrounding circuitry may be responsible.
Unknown match The observed behavior resembles a device definition in the tester’s library. Guaranteed identification; parts can share logic behavior, and a faulty part can confuse the search.
Intermittent result There may be a contact, thermal, or marginal fault, or a problem with the fixture. Proof of counterfeit origin or a particular failure mechanism.

A logic tester can miss slow propagation, weak output drive, excessive supply current, marginal noise margins, or failures that appear only with heat or a different load. For an op amp, a basic fixture may not measure offset, bias current, common-mode range, slew rate, bandwidth, noise, or stability in the intended feedback network. A passing result means only that the checked behavior passed.

Can you test an IC in-circuit?

Out-of-circuit testing in a known socket is usually more reliable for deciding whether a loose device is functional. On a populated board, connected components may load or clamp outputs, hold inputs at fixed states, create feedback, back-power the chip, or contend with the tester’s driven signals. Any of these can create a misleading result.

Some universal testers offer in-circuit logic testing. Tesca describes an optional clip and a mode that can drive up to six logic inputs and monitor three logic outputs. That is a limited observation of a circuit, not an isolated test of every IC function. Tesca in-circuit tester description

  • Loose-chip sorting: Prefer out-of-circuit functional testing.
  • Board fault isolation: In-circuit tests can help, but verify a suspected bad IC out of circuit or isolate the surrounding network before replacement.
  • Powered-board diagnosis: A multimeter, oscilloscope, logic analyzer, or current measurement is often better suited to checking supply, clock, reset, loading, and signal behavior in context.

What to check before buying

  1. Exact support list: Verify the actual part numbers, family suffixes, pinouts, and package types you use. Ask for the manual and library before purchase.
  2. Package access: Check whether the device is DIP, SOIC, TSSOP, QFP, or another package, and price the necessary adapter or breakout. A large library is no help if the chip cannot connect.
  3. Test conditions: Check supply-voltage range, logic thresholds, source/sink current, loading, current limiting, and protection. A 5-V logic test is not proof of behavior at 3.3 V.
  4. Test depth: Determine whether an analog claim means basic functional screening or specified measurements such as offset, slew rate, or output swing.
  5. Identification limits: Treat auto-find as a library search, then confirm the marking, pinout, and datasheet.
  6. In-circuit needs: Buy for a documented in-circuit workflow only if that capability is essential; surrounding circuitry can compromise the result.
  7. Documentation and service: Look for a public manual, support list, self-test or calibration procedure, update path, replaceable adapters, and vendor support.
  8. Availability and power: Confirm the product is currently sold and suitable for your region. Some pages are enquiry-based, and legacy instruments may be discontinued; check mains requirements as well as device coverage.

For example, GW Instek lists the GUT-6000B as discontinued, so it is a legacy or used-equipment option rather than a straightforward new purchase. GW Instek GUT-6000B status Product listings and stock can change, so confirm availability directly with the seller rather than treating a catalog page as proof of current stock.

When another tool is the better choice

  • Vintage DIP logic inventory: A dedicated TTL/CMOS tester is convenient when its documented library covers your exact chips.
  • Mixed DIP digital and analog stock: A universal tester can save setup time if the actual support list and analog routines meet your needs.
  • Op-amp evaluation: A datasheet-based fixture with a suitable bench supply, DMM, and oscilloscope is often more informative than a generic pass/fail routine.
  • Modern surface-mount devices: A programmer or test fixture with the correct adapter, plus bench instruments, is generally more practical than a DIP-only tester.
  • Occasional board troubleshooting: Start with a multimeter and, where signals require it, an oscilloscope or logic analyzer; these diagnose the surrounding circuit as well as the IC.
  • Repeated testing of an unusual analog part: A dedicated fixture based on its datasheet can be more transparent and reproducible, but it requires correct design, supplies, loads, and measurements.

A tester is most valuable when it automates a test you need often. It is not a replacement for the datasheet or for measurements under the conditions that matter in the finished circuit.
