The best-documented leadership news about IBM’s x86 server business is its 2014 transfer to Lenovo—not a confirmed new appointment matching the headline “IBM names new manager for x86 server business.” Lenovo said Adalio Sanchez, who led the business at IBM, would continue leading it at Lenovo. The original article behind the supplied headline, including its date and the identity of any purported new manager, remains unverified.

What happened to IBM’s x86 server business?

IBM and Lenovo announced on September 29, 2014, that conditions for their x86 server business acquisition had been satisfied and that closing was expected to begin on October 1. The companies announced the initial closing on October 1, 2014.

The deal moved much of IBM’s x86 server operation to Lenovo. Lenovo said the global x86 team would be organized under its Enterprise Business Group.

Products and operations transferred

  • System x, BladeCenter and Flex System server lines
  • x86-based Flex integrated systems, NeXtScale and iDataPlex servers
  • Associated software, blade networking and maintenance operations

Products IBM retained

  • System z mainframes and Power Systems
  • Storage Systems and Power-based Flex servers
  • PureApplication and PureData appliances

Who led the business after the transfer?

Lenovo identified Adalio Sanchez as the executive who had led the business at IBM and said he would continue leading it at Lenovo as senior vice president of Enterprise Systems, reporting to Gerry Smith. That establishes leadership continuity through the transaction; it does not establish a newly appointed manager matching the supplied headline.

PCWorld’s September 2014 account also identified Sanchez as general manager of IBM’s x86 and PureSystems group and reported that he would move to Lenovo to lead the acquired business. Lenovo’s announcement is the primary source for the transfer and reporting line.

What the headline does—and does not—confirm

The available evidence supports a historical account of IBM’s x86 server business moving to Lenovo and Sanchez continuing in a leadership role there. It does not identify the original publication or context of “IBM names new manager for x86 server business,” nor verify the identity or appointment date of a different new manager. Andrew Sotiropoulos is not established as that person: a 2013 IT Jungle article says he was in charge of IBM’s xSeries business in the early 2000s, which is separate historical background.

What the acquisition price meant

In its October 1, 2014 closing announcement, IBM and Lenovo gave approximate transaction consideration of US$2.1 billion: about US$1.8 billion in cash after estimated adjustments and about US$280 million in Lenovo stock. That was the parties’ announced consideration for the 2014 transaction, not a current valuation. Lenovo’s September 29 announcement described the global x86 server market as US$42.1 billion at that time; it is likewise a contemporaneous figure, not a current market-size estimate.
