IBM’s redesigned QRadar SIEM is a cloud-native platform built on Red Hat OpenShift for hybrid-cloud deployments, open integrations and AI-assisted security operations. IBM announced it on November 7, 2023. The product’s SaaS story subsequently changed: IBM sold selected QRadar SaaS assets to Palo Alto Networks in 2024, while IBM retained support for on-premises QRadar. Customers must therefore distinguish the rebuilt architecture from the separate lifecycle of specific SaaS products.

What IBM changed in QRadar SIEM

This was an architectural rebuild rather than a cosmetic interface update. IBM designed the new QRadar SIEM specifically for hybrid-cloud scale, speed and flexibility, using Red Hat OpenShift as its cloud-native foundation.

  • Open operation: support for open standards, SIGMA detection rules and multiple search and detection approaches reduces dependence on a single vendor format.
  • Federated investigation: analysts can search cloud and on-premises data where it resides instead of first copying everything into one repository.
  • Scale-oriented data handling: IBM describes efficient ingestion, rapid search and analytics for large, distributed environments.
  • Broad connectivity: the announcement cited more than 700 pre-built integrations for security and infrastructure products.

The design is intended for organizations that operate data centers, private clouds and public-cloud services at the same time. It does not require every workload or log source to move to one central location before analysts can investigate an incident.

Why IBM rebuilt the platform

IBM said security operations teams commonly reach fewer than half of the alerts they are expected to review during a workday. Its 2023 release quantified that problem at 49%. The rebuild targets the resulting backlog by reducing noise and shortening the path from an alert to an actionable incident.

Kevin Skapinetz, IBM’s vice president for security strategy and product management, described the cloud-native SIEM as a core element of IBM’s security-operations strategy for the hybrid-cloud and AI era. The practical objective is to make multiple security technologies feel like one investigation environment rather than a collection of disconnected consoles.

How QRadar uses AI

IBM’s announced AI functions are aimed at analyst assistance, not autonomous replacement of the SOC. They include:

  • prioritizing alerts so analysts can work the most consequential events first;
  • grouping related alerts and adding context to turn isolated signals into incidents;
  • escalating cases according to their apparent urgency;
  • running federated searches during an investigation;
  • building visual attack timelines;
  • mapping activity to the MITRE ATT&CK framework; and
  • recommending investigation or response actions.

IBM also announced planned watsonx generative-AI capabilities for summarizing cases, producing reports and creating threat-hunting searches from natural-language descriptions. Those are IBM-reported capabilities; the announcement does not establish an independent accuracy or productivity benchmark.

Shared insights and connected workflows are intended to let an analyst move from detection to investigation and response without rebuilding the case in separate products. Organizations should still confirm which modules, connectors and entitlements are included in their contract.

Deployment options and lifecycle status

Deployment or product context What IBM described Current qualification
QRadar SaaS The original roadmap targeted general availability in the fourth quarter of 2023. IBM sold selected QRadar SaaS assets to Palo Alto Networks in May 2024 for approximately $500 million. Palo Alto offered migration of affected customers to Cortex XSIAM. Product-level status must be checked against the customer’s entitlement.
QRadar on premises IBM’s rebuilt direction included on-premises software alongside cloud capabilities. IBM said on-premises customers would continue receiving features, security fixes, connector updates and support.
QRadar multi-cloud software The roadmap targeted on-premises and multi-cloud software during 2024. No single current availability or licensing model for every multi-cloud edition was published; verify the exact product and contract.

IBM’s lifecycle notice records the divestiture on September 5, 2024. It also notes a Palo Alto Networks end-of-life announcement dated April 14, 2025 for acquired threat-management QRadar SaaS products. “QRadar SaaS” is therefore not one universal lifecycle category: the affected product name, tenant, contract and acquired asset determine what happens next.

Do QRadar SaaS customers need to move to Cortex XSIAM?

Not every QRadar customer is automatically required to migrate. The transaction covered selected SaaS assets, and Palo Alto’s migration path applies to customers of those products. A customer using IBM’s on-premises QRadar is in a different support situation.

Before approving a migration, document the exact QRadar service and entitlement, the controlling vendor after the divestiture, the applicable end-of-life date, and the replacement scope offered by Cortex XSIAM. Treat a generic statement that “QRadar is discontinued” as insufficiently precise.

What on-premises customers should expect

IBM stated that on-premises customers would continue to receive product features, security fixes, connector updates and support. That commitment means an on-premises deployment does not automatically inherit the SaaS divestiture or require an immediate move to Palo Alto’s platform.

It does not eliminate normal upgrade planning. Teams should maintain supported versions, test connector compatibility, confirm renewal terms and map any planned cloud transition separately from the SaaS asset sale.

How the rebuilt architecture affects a SOC

Data placement

Federated search can reduce the need to centralize every event before investigation. This may help with data-residency rules, network costs or environments where some telemetry must remain on premises, but query performance and coverage still depend on the connected sources and their integrations.

Detection portability

SIGMA and other open approaches make it easier to share or adapt detections across tools than a proprietary-only rule format would. Conversion, tuning and validation are still required before a community rule is trusted in production.

Analyst workflow

The QRadar Suite model connects SIEM, SOAR, endpoint and log-management functions. That can reduce console switching, provided the organization has licensed and integrated the relevant modules.

Integration planning

More than 700 pre-built integrations provide a starting point, not a guarantee that every source has identical depth or maintenance. Check the connector’s supported version, fields, ingestion method and update policy during design.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify the deployment: record whether the environment is QRadar SaaS, on premises or a multi-cloud edition.
  2. Match the entitlement: compare the exact service and contract with IBM’s divestiture records and Palo Alto’s lifecycle notices.
  3. Inventory dependencies: list log sources, SIGMA or custom rules, SOAR playbooks, endpoint data, dashboards and integrations.
  4. Measure workflow impact: determine which alerts, searches and response actions must be preserved in any migration.
  5. Choose the operating model: retain IBM-supported on-premises QRadar where it meets requirements, or evaluate Cortex XSIAM when the affected SaaS product and migration terms apply.
  6. Validate before cutover: run representative detections, federated searches, case timelines and response automations against real retention and data-residency constraints.

Bottom line for buyers and administrators

IBM’s rebuilt QRadar is a cloud-native, OpenShift-based SIEM designed to unify hybrid-cloud data, open detections and AI-assisted investigation. Its technical direction remains relevant to distributed SOCs, but its SaaS commercial context changed after IBM transferred selected assets to Palo Alto Networks. Verify the exact product lifecycle before making a migration decision, and do not confuse the SaaS transaction with IBM’s stated ongoing support for on-premises QRadar.
