IBM Power Systems is the family of IBM servers built around POWER processors. IBM now commonly presents the platform as IBM Power or Power servers; the name refers to server hardware, not to a single operating system.
What does IBM Power Systems mean?
IBM’s POWER7 documentation defines IBM Power Systems as “the name of the family of servers based on POWER® processors.” That is the clearest distinction: Power Systems is a server platform family, while POWER identifies the processor architecture used in its servers. IBM’s current product overview uses the names IBM Power and Power servers. Older documents may still use IBM Power Systems, and naming can differ by generation.
The family name alone does not identify a particular server’s capabilities. Hardware features and supported software vary by model and generation.
What runs on IBM Power servers?
IBM lists AIX, IBM i, and Linux on Power as operating-system choices for the platform. These are distinct operating systems, not alternative names for IBM Power Systems. Support for a specific operating system and version depends on the server model and generation, so check the system’s compatibility documentation before planning a deployment.

What is PowerVM?
PowerVM is IBM’s virtualization environment for Power servers. It allows workloads to run in logical partitions and system resources to be shared. IBM describes support for AIX, IBM i, and Linux environments in its PowerVM overview.
PowerVM capabilities are not identical across every system. For example, features such as Live Partition Mobility depend on the PowerVM edition and hardware generation. IBM’s PowerVM Editions overview provides edition context; verify feature support for the exact system being considered.

What is IBM Power used for?
IBM positions Power servers for demanding business workloads and hybrid-cloud deployments. Those are IBM’s product descriptions, not a like-for-like independent performance comparison with other server platforms. Whether a system suits a particular application depends on its requirements and on the server’s supported software and configuration.
