IBM says Bob integrates directly with IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS) and targets two Maximo jobs: modernizing legacy configurations and optimizing automation scripts. IBM also reports an estimated 69% time saving for its own Maximo team on code-generation and refactoring tasks. Neither claim comes with a published method, supported-version list, or independent validation, so treat Bob as a promising tool to test on your own code, not as a proven Maximo productivity gain.
What IBM has said about Bob and Maximo
The Maximo-specific source is an IBM event listing titled “Webinar: Bob Integration with Maximo,” dated September 10, 2026. It describes the Bob integration as focused on modernizing legacy configurations, optimizing automation scripts, and accelerating software development lifecycles. It says Bob integrates directly with MAS.
The listing does not explain how that integration works. It does not say which MAS or Maximo releases are supported, what permissions Bob needs, or what configuration is required. Those are the first questions a platform or Maximo team should put to IBM before any pilot.
IBM’s broader Bob announcement, dated July 9, 2026, describes Bob as an agentic software development platform with multi-agent capabilities and cost and usage analytics. It announces packages for IBM Z, IBM i, and Java modernization. It does not announce a Maximo-specific package, so any Maximo support should be confirmed as a Maximo capability rather than assumed from the general release.

Reading the 69% figure correctly
IBM’s event listing reports an estimated 69% time saving for the IBM Maximo team on code-generation and refactoring tasks. It is a vendor estimate, measured by IBM, and it applies to IBM’s team rather than to customer engineers working on their own estimates and codebases.
| Question | What the public listing states |
|---|---|
| Who produced the estimate | IBM, as reported in its Maximo event listing (2026) |
| Tasks covered | Code generation and refactoring; no task breakdown given |
| Measurement method | Not stated |
| Baseline and sample size | Not stated |
| Independent validation | None identified |
| Applies to your team | Not established; depends on your task mix, code quality, and review process |
Quote the figure as “IBM’s event listing reports an estimated 69% time saving on code-generation and refactoring tasks.” Presenting it as a generally expected gain overstates what IBM has published.
The IBM Expert Labs accelerator brief
A separate IBM Expert Labs solution brief, “AI Accelerators for IBM Maximo,” appeared in search results. The full document could not be retrieved for verification, so the details below reflect the search summary and should be checked against the original before you quote or act on them.

Java customization conversion
The summary describes migration accelerators for Java customizations with three phases: code analysis, conversion, and validation. It says Java logic can be converted into Python or Jython automation scripts aligned to Maximo launch points. Launch points are the places in Maximo where a script runs, so a conversion that ignores them can change behavior even when the code compiles.
Database and report work
The same summary lists database conversion to Db2 and conversion of BIRT reports as accelerator areas. No technical workflow for these is described in the material available.
The 50% modernization-time claim
The brief advertises a 50% reduction in modernization time. This is an IBM-published claim. The baseline, the projects measured, and the evaluation method were not available, and the surfaced result does not state the publication year. Do not present this figure as established.

What Bob is, in IBM’s own terms
IBM’s Bob product page describes three modes. These are product descriptions, not Maximo-specific feature guarantees.
- Ask for analysis without changes to code.
- Plan for architecture and technical planning.
- Agent to implement work.
The page lists software development use cases including testing and quality automation, feature development, API integration and automation, and modernization of Java, COBOL, RPG, and mainframe systems. Maximo is not named among these use cases.
IBM says Bob can be deployed in customer-controlled environments, including air-gapped environments, and lists local and private or hybrid model options. The product page also lists premium packages for Java, IBM i, and IBM Z. Confirm current packaging, model options, and technical prerequisites with IBM before any purchase or deployment decision, because these change.
The July 2026 announcement adds Bobalytics, which IBM describes as providing usage visibility and cost optimization. It also describes parallel model-native tool calling and subagents that manage context on complex work. IBM says it supports customizable, repeatable workflows for enterprise modernization. None of these features has been validated for Maximo work in the public material reviewed.
IBM’s Neel Sundaresan, GM of Automation and AI, framed the product this way in the July announcement: “The bar for enterprise AI is no longer a better coding assistant. It’s an end-to-end agentic development partner that works inside any system development teams already use, with the governance, security, and cost controls enterprises require.” That is a statement of intent, not evidence of Maximo performance.

Based on IBM’s stated use cases, the most plausible first candidates are bounded tasks where behavior can be checked precisely:
- Reviewing and refactoring existing automation scripts whose inputs and outputs are well documented.
- Analyzing legacy configurations to explain what they do before changing them.
- Producing a conversion plan for a small set of Java customizations, followed by line-by-line review.
Tasks that carry the most risk are better deferred until a pilot has shown reliable results: production configuration changes, large-scale Java-to-Python conversions across many launch points, and any change that affects data integrity or approvals.
The limit on review effort matters. The GitLab 2026 AI Accountability Report, which IBM cites, found that 85% of surveyed DevSecOps professionals agreed AI had shifted the bottleneck from writing code to reviewing and validating it. That is broad industry context, not Maximo evidence, but it suggests that time saved on generation can return as review time.

Because the public material does not establish the integration architecture or supported versions, a credible evaluation starts with getting those answers in writing from IBM and then running a controlled pilot.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the exact MAS and Maximo versions, deployment topology, source repository, and access controls with IBM, and record the answers.
- Choose a bounded, representative automation script or configuration whose expected behavior is already documented.
- Record a baseline for the same task done the current way: analysis, implementation, review, testing, and correction time.
- Run the pilot in a non-production sandbox. Start in Ask mode for analysis, move to Plan mode for an approach, and use Agent mode only for changes you can diff and revert.
- Have a Maximo engineer review every generated change, including launch-point behavior and any data-handling logic.
- Run functional tests that compare pre-change and post-change behavior, and log every correction needed.
- Check security and governance controls, data handling, and the model usage and plan costs that apply to your team.
Measures to record
| Measure | Why it matters | Status in public evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Specific Maximo task | Estimates do not transfer across task types | Not stated for Maximo |
| Functional equivalence after execution | Generated code can look correct and still change launch-point behavior | Not stated |
| Test coverage | Shows what the pilot actually verified | Not stated |
| Human review effort | Can offset generation time savings | Not stated |
| Supported Maximo environment | Determines whether results apply to your system | Not stated in IBM’s event listing |
| Security and data handling | Determines whether customer-controlled deployment is needed | Described in general IBM product terms; not Maximo-specific |
| Total cost and model usage | Includes any IBM plan or package required | Packaging described on IBM’s product page; verify current pricing |
No published head-to-head Maximo comparison of Bob against a manual workflow or another tool was identified, so your own pilot data is the only measure that will answer the question for your environment.
Limits and cautions
- Nothing in the public material shows Bob changing production Maximo systems autonomously, and no source states that a Maximo migration is safe without engineering review.
- IBM’s own Expert Labs description includes a validation phase, which argues for functional testing and expert review rather than acceptance of generated output.
- Not all Maximo customizations can be converted. The accelerator material does not claim otherwise.
- The quotes from Blue Pearl, Jack Henry, and other customers in IBM’s materials come from IBM-published statements about other projects. No named Maximo customer or engineer is quoted in the Maximo listing.
- Case figures on IBM’s product page, such as a Java uplift completed in about three days, describe other workloads and are not Maximo benchmarks.
The Maximo position is still early. IBM has named the use cases and reported one internal estimate, but the architecture, version support, and independent results remain to be shown.
