IBM acquired Ahana Cloud, Inc. in April 2023. The purchase price was not disclosed. Ahana sold Ahana Cloud, a managed SaaS service built around PrestoDB, an open-source SQL query engine for analytics across data sources. IBM said it would integrate the business into its Software segment; the available evidence does not establish whether Ahana Cloud remains a separately marketed IBM product in 2026.
When did IBM buy Ahana, and how much did it pay?
IBM acquired Ahana in April 2023. IBM’s first-quarter 2023 Form 10-Q records the acquisition in the second quarter and says Ahana would be integrated into the Software segment. IBM’s 2023 annual report describes Ahana as an open-source-based provider of managed, cloud-native data analytics solutions.
The purchase price was not disclosed in InfoWorld’s April 14, 2023 acquisition report. A separate funding figure sometimes associated with Ahana is not the acquisition price: in 2020, the company announced a $2.25 million seed round led by GV.
What was Ahana Cloud?
Ahana provided Ahana Cloud, a managed software-as-a-service version of PrestoDB. Rather than requiring customers to operate the query engine themselves, the service offered managed Presto for cloud analytics and data-lake workloads. The available acquisition coverage describes this as hosted software, not a physical product.

Ahana joined the Linux Foundation’s Presto Foundation in 2020. That connection placed the company within the open-source project’s broader ecosystem. Its seed-round announcement and foundation membership were reported by Ahana on June 2, 2020.
What is PrestoDB?
PrestoDB, also called Presto, is an open-source distributed SQL query engine created at Facebook. It is designed for ad hoc analytics across data of varying sizes, including data-lake workloads. In practical terms, it lets users query data using SQL without requiring all of that data to be consolidated in a traditional database first.
PrestoDB is the underlying query technology; Ahana Cloud was a managed service built around it. That distinction matters: IBM’s acquisition was of Ahana Cloud, Inc., a company and its cloud analytics business, not ownership of the Presto open-source project itself.
Why did IBM acquire Ahana?
IBM presented the deal as an investment in open-source projects and foundations, rather than announcing a specific financial synergy. Ahana’s participation in the Presto Foundation offered IBM a connection to the project’s ecosystem and governance. IBM described the acquired business as cloud-native data analytics and assigned it to its Software segment, aligning it with IBM’s broader hybrid-cloud data-platform direction.
In the acquisition account, IBM vice president of hybrid data management Vikram Murali and Ahana CEO Steven Mih wrote: “We see our involvement with Presto Foundation as a similar relationship.” That statement frames the rationale around IBM’s engagement with open-source communities, not a claim that IBM created or controlled PrestoDB.
What happened to Ahana after the acquisition?
IBM’s filing says Ahana would be integrated into the Software segment. The sources reviewed establish the acquisition and that planned integration, but do not establish whether Ahana Cloud remains a separately marketed product, what it may be called within IBM, or whether it is available as a standalone service in 2026. Avoid assuming the old product name or availability without current IBM product documentation.

How Ahana fits among hosted SQL analytics services
At the time of the 2023 acquisition coverage, Ahana Cloud sat in a broader category of hosted SQL query services for analytics on distributed data. Starburst’s Trino-based offerings and Amazon Athena were identified as adjacent or competing services. They should be understood as software services, not hardware products.
A useful comparison of services in this category depends on current product details: whether the service is managed or self-managed, its SQL engine and connector ecosystem, integration with cloud object storage, governance and licensing, workload scale and performance, security and enterprise support, and present availability. The acquisition coverage does not establish a current 2026 feature or price comparison, so it cannot support a claim that Ahana—or any alternative—is the best choice today.
