Munster Rugby and the IRFU announced on 1 October 2026 that CEO Ian Flanagan will step down at the end of October. They said an interim chief executive would be announced in the coming weeks, followed by a recruitment process for a permanent successor. The statement did not give a reason for his decision.
What Munster Rugby announced
The joint announcement said Flanagan had informed the Munster board of his decision to leave the CEO role at October’s end. It named no successor. An interim appointment and a permanent recruitment process were described as next steps, not completed appointments. RTÉ Sport’s report of the announcement has the details.

Flanagan described leading his home province as “a huge privilege” and thanked colleagues and supporters, according to The Irish Times.

Munster chair Ger Malone credited Flanagan with a central role in developing and delivering the Cork Centre of Excellence. Malone described it as a €7.3 million investment in player development and the wider game across the province. The figure is the stated cost of that project, not a measure of Flanagan’s performance.

Does the decision relate to Munster’s governance controversy?
The announcement did not state why Flanagan decided to leave, so it does not establish that governance disputes caused his departure. Those disputes are relevant context, but should not be presented as a confirmed explanation.
RTÉ reported that Munster commissioned an independent governance and organisational review after the handling and cancellation of a proposed Roger Randle appointment. Its coverage also described resignations from governance and advisory roles. Peter O’Mahony called for change, telling the Indo Sport podcast: “I think Munster needs to have a good look at the governance of the building, the governance of the whole organisation, and I think it needs change.” These are reported developments and attributed comments, not a stated reason for Flanagan’s decision. Flanagan’s tenure at Munster
Flanagan became CEO in 2019, succeeding Garrett Fitzgerald, and Munster won the United Rugby Championship in 2023 during his tenure, according to The 42. Those points provide background; they do not, by themselves, settle how his tenure should be assessed.
