Seventeen years after buying her first DSLR, the Canon EOS 1000D, photographer Amy Davies returned to it and found that its physical controls and familiar handling still felt rewarding. Her experience is a reminder that an older camera can make worthwhile photographs, even when its slower operation and limited screen make it feel a long way behind a modern phone. It is one photographer’s return to one camera—not a controlled comparison or a claim that every old DSLR performs the same way.

Why the EOS 1000D still felt familiar

Davies bought her Canon EOS 1000D in 2009, a year after the model was released. Returning to it, she found that the physical controls felt familiar and that she had retained muscle memory from using the camera years earlier. That sense of picking up a known tool was part of the pleasure: the experience was not just about the image files, but about handling a camera she had used at the beginning of her photography.

The EOS 1000D is also called the EOS Digital Rebel XS in the United States. Canon’s 2008 specifications list a 10.10-megapixel effective resolution, a 22.2 × 14.8 mm sensor, an EF lens mount, compatibility with EF and EF-S lenses, and an LP-E5 battery. Those figures describe the camera’s original specification; they do not establish how any particular used body or aged battery will perform today.

What it was like to shoot with it

Viewfinder and controls

The optical viewfinder and physical controls offered a direct, hands-on way to work. But the viewfinder shows 95% of the scene, according to the specifications reported in Davies’s Amateur Photographer article. A small amount around the edges of a frame may therefore appear in the captured image without having been visible through the viewfinder.

Autofocus and Live View

The camera has seven autofocus points, and Davies found its Live View slow. That combination matters if you expect to focus quickly using the rear screen or to track a subject across the frame. The experience she describes suits a more deliberate pace better than a modern, responsive phone-camera workflow.

Rear screen in bright light

Davies also found the 2.5-inch rear display difficult to see in bright daylight. It can make composing or reviewing a shot outdoors less convenient than using a brighter, more modern screen. The viewfinder is an alternative for composing, but it does not remove the screen’s limitations when you want to review an image.

Can an old DSLR still take good photos?

In Davies’s experience with this EOS 1000D, yes: she reports that it made detailed images and portraits with shallow depth of field. She also found that some exposures benefited from RAW processing. These are her observations from using the camera, not the outcome of a controlled comparison against a current phone or camera.

The body’s 10.10-megapixel effective resolution is modest by current standards, but a megapixel figure alone does not determine whether a photograph is useful or pleasing. The more relevant question is whether the camera’s image quality, lens and slower way of working meet your needs. Davies’s return suggests that the older camera remained capable of producing pictures she valued; it does not establish that it will match newer devices in every situation.

How it compares with using a phone

Davies frames the return against the convenience and processing of modern phones, while valuing the DSLR’s physical controls, viewfinder experience and ability to make shallow-depth-of-field portraits. The trade-off is practical: a phone is generally ready to shoot and process quickly, while this camera asks you to work around older autofocus and Live View. Neither experience is an overall winner for every photographer; the choice depends on whether convenience or deliberate, hands-on shooting matters more to you.

Davies’s broader view that phones have displaced entry-level DSLRs is her perspective, not a measured market finding. Her article offers a personal account of the EOS 1000D rather than evidence about the performance of old DSLRs as a category.

The lenses and battery setup

Davies used the EOS 1000D with an 18–55mm kit lens and a 50mm f/1.4 lens. Canon specifies compatibility with EF lenses, including EF-S lenses, but that does not mean every used lens or body will be in good working order. If you are considering a used setup, check the exact lens model and its physical condition as well as the camera body.

Canon identifies the LP-E5 battery and LC-E5/LC-E5E charger family for this camera. Its manual estimates about 600 shots at 23°C with no flash, or about 500 shots when flash is used for half of the shots, with a fully charged LP-E5 battery. These are Canon’s CIPA-based estimates, not a promise of endurance from a battery that has aged through years of use.

What to check before buying one used

The EOS 1000D is a used-market camera, so its condition and what comes in the box matter more than a historical price mention. In her September 29, 2026 article, Davies described finding a second-hand camera with a kit lens for under £150. That was her observation at the time, not a current price survey or a guarantee of what a working kit costs now.

  • Body: Check that the camera powers on and that its controls and screen work as expected.
  • Lens: Confirm the exact lens included, that it is an EF or EF-S lens, and that its body and optics are in acceptable condition. Do not assume every 18–55mm kit lens is the same version; check whether it is an IS or non-IS model.
  • Power: Confirm whether a working LP-E5 battery and compatible charger are included. Factor replacements into the total cost if they are missing or unreliable.
  • Total cost: Compare the condition and included accessories, not just the body price. A low initial price can be less attractive if essential power accessories or a suitable lens still need to be found.

Who is likely to enjoy returning to this camera?

The EOS 1000D makes most sense for someone drawn to an inexpensive, tactile, slower way of photographing, or for a former owner who wants to revisit a camera they know. It is less suited to someone who needs fast autofocus, responsive screen-based shooting or the most convenient point-and-shoot experience. Davies’s account is persuasive as a story about rediscovering a familiar tool: the camera’s limits remained real, but they did not prevent her from enjoying it or making photographs she liked.
